Hi Claudia, and glad to see you back at your guitar!! There is so much good advice on this thread already, I can only say that if you love playing guitar, don’t give up!! Keep trying, have fun, and make a list of your goals, both short and long term. Have fun crossing off all your guitar goals, and make sure to notice all your “small wins” as they all add up over time to equal incredible progress.
Also, be kind to yourself. Expect progress, not perfection. Keep trying and don’t stop playing for 35 years like I did (and so many other guitar players).
Best wishes, Carol 3M

I just love both classical and steel string guitars!!! It’s great to play both. And yes it takes a week at least for new nylon strings to settle in and hold their tuning. Most classicals are 12fretters and have a much wider nut and a very flat fretboard. Classical players don’t usually use a flatpick so no pickguard is standard fare. I find the nylon strings much softer on my fingers, the notes easier to fret and barre chords are somewhat easier. Also it has a distinctive tone that is just addictive. Welcome to the classical guitar world, enjoy your stay 🥰

Hi @Gord001, and welcome to the TAC community!! It’s great that you are working through your carpal tunnel recovery and keeping at your guitar lessons faithfully!!
All I can offer is an assurance that NO you are NOT just too dumb for this… Everybody learns things in their own way and in their own time. I’ve been playing for almost 7 years and I STILL count the names of the strings when someone is trying to teach me something. And I use the same Eddy Ate Dynamite Good Bye Eddy, hahaha. You see, I don’t play “notes” in my mind, I play shapes and positions. So if someone tells me to play a note I have to stop and figure it out. Or play a b string… I need to say the Eddy thing… But if you show me a TAB/music, my brain can say, Oh, I need my finger to fret the 3rd fret on the 2nd string… who cares what note it is….
So I am agreeing with Michael, that you may need to write things out in a way that your brain and your fingers can more easily decipher it, so that you are able to move past the frustration and get to the fun part of playing some music 🙂
