I can relate @GerryB56 makes me think about how I even learned to talk when I was little.

There is a strategy that helped me out of those funks. When I embrace the fact that there is no “there” to get to, only more and more to learn. This frees me to enjoy the process of learning. I love playing, the feel of the guitar in my arms and hands, the sound of a single note ringing out and the full sound of a well struck G chord. When I focus on that and that alone it gets me out of my funk. If I start thinking of my playing in terms of comparisons (not say you are but it is a dark place I used to go until I realized it was hurting not helping) or where I should be based on ? (the last time I learned to play? Not.) It takes away from the thrill I get everytime I hit that G chord. It takes excitement out of the challenge of new things. Everytime I pick up the guitar I know I am learning something new or improving on a sound I would like to improve. If I observe carefully and take note of those micro improvements it helps me to stay super motivated. It is a bit like filling up a 5 gallon water jug with pennies: easy to see as the bottom gets covered but when you get 1/2″ up it is easier to gage progress of fill by observing the penny being dropped in rather than by measuring the level of fill.

You are making me laugh @Mrfredsporty and that is “laughing with you”. As long a we keep climbing it is about the climb. Let’s get to the top and slide down even if there is no rain to wash us out just so we can climb some more. Liking your win today!

Totally normal and in some cases desired. When you are playing notes the open strings will ring out making sympathetic tones. I don’t remember off hand what key Tony plays Billy in the Low ground but let say it is G. When you hit the Bass note of G on the low E string the open string G will ring out sympathetically, activated by the vibration of the guitar itself. other strings will also ring out like the B string and the E. You can test this by just playing a single note loudly and slightly touching all the other strings to see which ones are vibrating. A light built highly active guitar will have lots of sympathetic tones. They should all be pleasing tones aligned with the key being played when tuned. If something is sounding wonky try retuning and playing again.

If the sympathetic tones are not what you want you will have to play in closed positions and get good at muting- barring with index as a damper.

Delve deeply @mrfredsporty, Swim far, eventually you will turn into a dolphin and a boat will be a novel thing for you to play in its bow wake. (I love metaphors). I have my set list of songs I started working on when I started TAC and I still work on them because I love them and there is always more detail to discover and execute. There is no wrong way except if you put the guitar down and leave it in the corner. Do whatever it takes to keep you playing everyday and loving what you play when you play it. Not necessarily the result but the effort. Until I am getting paid for performing I have no pressure for results making it super fun to enjoy the effort.

It is a beautiful song. Would love to play it with you IRL. I keep hoping for another AcousticLifeFest in Bozeman. Hope springs eternal.

Dylan is amazing to work on because his phrasing fits so uniquely in the rhythm structure. I have been working on and off on Its All Over Now Baby Blue for years. I have found it to be an exceptional challenge and one of the best music puzzles I have worked on. I give it a go for a few months at a time and then put it down for half a year or so. Everytime I come back to it the little bits I could not get are revealed. Another song very Dylan like is Neil Youngs Old Man. So much magical detail and rhythmic/vocal phrasing nuance. I put that up as my #2 best music puzzle.

My complaint with the Thalia picks is they were laminated and made changing the bevel an act of futility. I have not delved deeply into Thalia’s offerings perhaps there are some solid ones available? I am convinced so far the harder the wood the better. I would enjoy hearing your take @Marty69 . Having had a few hours in the saddle yourself, your take is particularly instructive for me.

I just got my Amboyna pick in and it disappointed me a little. That may be because my expectation was set so high with the Snakewood burl. I would buy 10 more of the Snakewood but not another Amboyna. I have a feeling hardness is a big player in what I like about the Snake wood and while Amboyna is still hard it is noticeably softer than the Snakewood.

@MikeGaurnier When is your Birthday? That is when the BlueChips seem to find their way to me. Birthdays and Christmas. Could be one coming your way. ps. P/M me your address. You may even have a nick name inscribed?

Hi @Cadgirl , the burl does that cool look as you discovered. I am concentrating on the hardest of the woods for now. It does have a slick feel like my Blue Chip picks but with a louder snap. Blue Chips are cool in that you hear very little of the pick sound. It has taken me a few repetitions (few as in few thousand) to eliminate the pick sound with the SnakeWood pick, and filing on a speed bevel was key, but again the dynamic range I can extract from the guitar is greater…soft volume to loud and back again. It just offers more tricks to the bag for my playing. The downside is they are 8.00. more than Primetone, less than BlueChip. For the money my Ultex 2.0 bought in bulk is still my go to. At .25 each I never worry about losing them.

I will be careful. If no splinters after a week, I will return to playing with reckless abandon. : )

What type of wood? I would love to know your experience with them. Are they thin enough to be flexible? The ones I have are not.
