@Joemama , I say it is the journey not the destination, here’s why: the destination is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. If you try to get to the pot of gold it just keeps moving away as you move closer. What does this tell me….just keep moving. Could you play too much? Your observations of your progress will be the tell, should that be the case. If you are not progressing and you are beginning to have physical difficulties, or mentally you are burnt, there would be your indications that perhaps you have overdone. I found playing smartly in focused sessions is better than slogging along all day in a daze. I think the trick it to be the controller of the obsession and not let the obsession control you. This allows that infinite well of energy to be harnessed in a productive direction….the direction of your desire. I am coming up on my 7th year here and have made tons of mistakes along the way…all of them overcome and in hindsight avoidable if I had been paying closer attention. None of them were more than temporary barriers to my progress. I did one thing and one thing very well….I played everyday no matter what. You will no doubt get in your own way too but as long as you stay connected to the community (they helped me through miles of rough roads) and play everyday no matter what you will become the player of your desires. One last thing, this is part of the key to playing everyday. End every session INTENTIONALLY on a high note. This will be a major charger for getting back to the next session even in the midst of burnout!

When I was at Marty Lanham’s shop in Nashville we talked about humidity and his number was 48% relative humidity. I go with that. Guitars will tolerate more or less for periods of time but if humidity is below or above the ideal, the further away from the ideal you go the shorter period of time you have before it begins effecting your guitar. You could have your guitar in the 20s for a day or two or the 70s but if it stays there you will risk cracks or buckling (popping braces and seams) The longer it is in the extremes the higher the risk of developing problems. I know a guy in Burlingame CA with a shop full of high end vintage guitars and he does not control humidity. There are a few days where humidity will run in the mid 30 but it gets followed by a few days where it will be in the 60s with most days around the high 40s. The averages equal out as long as the period of exposure is not prolonged as in Weeks to Months.

I would open that guitar up and play it as soon as I got it and not even worry. If you want you could crack the case for a few hours but as long as it was not subjected to extremes you will be okay. I would want to inspect it right away any how to make sure it was as promised. That includes playing.

I love vintage and most of the vintage stuff (exluding strictly collector, not player guitars and don’t even get me started on that weird genre) have cracks. It is not a big deal. Cracks are easily fixed if dealt with in a timely manner by skilled hands. Same with brace and seam issues. Many fixes cannot even be seen. Not the end of the world for either but rather part of how guitars are.

Play play play that new guitar and Happiest NGD to you!!!

that is how I do it @Timbothirroul . Never spent much time on tabs so I really had to be desperate to consult them. I do take a few runs of listening only and that has helped my listening skills tremendously. I spent so many years as a passive listener it was initially a challenge to transition to a focused active listening.

@Guitargeezer-Jack , well done. If you think the first year was good, buckle up my friend because just when you think it can’t get any better, it does. The only requirement is to keep playing. I wish you fast, easy progress toward your goals.

probably want to be looking at shorter scale guitars. OOO short scale vs Om longscale. J45 short scale vs Advanced jumbo long scale. look for scale length of 24.75. Its not much but other than uke that is what guitars have. There is 3/4 size but it is a different thing, I don’t think that is what you are asking. Check out some Paul Simon videos. He plays OOO’s and has tiny hands.

@SciencePete Good question: to pink anchor or to not pinky anchor. When I first started I had a hard time hitting the same string twice in a row with my flatpick so anchoring with my pinky gave me a little more steadyness and confidence to find what I was having a hard time locating. Over time my anchor got in the way and did not allow me the tone palate I wanted to explore so I abandoned it. I don’t anchor with my fingers anymore but as @MikeGaurnier pointed out there are other ways to anchor. I will use my hand on the bridge and my forearm on the lower bout depending on what I am doing. There are occasions that I try to touch the guitar body as little as possible and that is fun too. The only thing touching is the pick on the strings and the body on my knee. Great sound! I can’t go as fast but when trying to get the ringing resonance no need to go so fast. Go with what works until it doesn’t work and then do something else.

Hi @seeks : @Loraine has it right when she advises to reflect on your recent past and assess if you have made progress since you began a daily routine. One of the most helpful practices in assessing your day in and day out progress is logging small wins in your guitar journal. This would be any light bulb that went on or any skill which may have improved. Try to log a small win after each session you do. Not everyday is a super day and I have had days where just doing the lesson when I was not motivated to do so was my win for the day. Or if no win for the day that is also something to pay attention to. Check you P/m (personal message box). I contacted you there.

There are two ways to get to past lessons once the month has passed. One way is to have added it to your favorites list by clicking on the heart Icon. This allows you to select it from your favorites list located at the dropdown arrow between your name and your thumbnail picture. In case you did not do this you can search other members and view their favorites list and access the lesson from their list. You can get to profile of other members by clicking their pictures or from the previously mentioned dropdown arrow: look for “Members” with the magnifying glass symbol.

Have fun @Powelly . Hope this speeds your progress.

Hi @KevinAppel , I will attempt to answer your question “How does it all fit together?” as succinctly as I can. When I started I was laying on the ground with my nose touching it and I could see that which was in front of me and a lot more in my peripheral vision but it was not as easy to see. As I began doing the lessons, day in and day out, I started to gain elevation and my vision/knowledge (the clarity of musical guitar real estate) increased in area. I spent a good deal of time trying to force my perspective to try and see over the horizon as it were but to no avail. After a prolonged period of trying to intellectualize and anticipate to no avail, I decided to trust the process be in the moment with the lessons. I reveled in the process of each lesson, enjoying the process (I paid Tony to teach me so I decided to let him instead of trying to teach myself). The process provided the elevation to which I could then see more. This allowed me to gain perspective and understanding of what was going on faster without the frustration I had previously experienced. My theory knowledge increased as my physical capabilities developed: two distinct things developing in tandem. It was as if everything blurry became clear but then I would begin to notice details that had not been remotely apparent before. This process continues to this day. Surprising details continue to fill in the picture. No lesson is ever old as I have learned so much since the last time I played it. I am 6ish years into the process. At a certain point you see that the whole thing is a big loop. Music is big loop. There is only one scale with infinite variations depending how small the detail is you are willing to see. I realized there was a whole music world right where I started with my nose on the ground…I just didn’t know what I was seeing there.

Sorry, longer than I wanted but that is my summary in answer to your question. Maybe the shortest answer: It fits together in time but you have to stick to it. Every day, do it! Observe your progress! It will reveal itself. The quality and focus of your effort will be the speed of your enlightenment. I guess I could have led with that 😊

I sure did listen to the soundcloud version. That is how I was able to provide thoughtful analysis.

My meds and the quacks hehe. My meds change every time I change chords. Yellow doesn’t make me sad but Dm sure does so I switch to G and all is well.
