    Like others have said, the calluses will come with time. Meanwhile, you can practice other skills like strumming patterns while muting the strings, use an open tuning and practice finger picking patterns without fretting any strings, flatpicking while muting strings, playing basic harmonics, etc. Basically, there are lots of skills to learn that don’t involve fretting.

      Oh, and don’t play right after washing dishes or showering. The water softens your skin and the calluses will rub off quickly.

    Adding a comment shows up just below the challenge and right above the comments. I find the dark mode easier to see elements on the page, so hopefully this screenshot helps.

    I’ve noticed the same thing, and sometimes I do that to make the transition easier. I *think* the index/ring/middle are more commonly used because that leaves the pinky open to fret/hammer-on/pull-off to add embellishments.

    So true! Of course, barre chords are explained as your index finger is acting as a capo, but rarely explained it doesn’t have to fret all 5-6 strings like a capo does.
