Yeah that has happened to me, I would call it injury not so much nerve damage. Should heal up. Try this – have a luthier/guitar tech do a set up on your guitar to set the action low and put 10’s on. This will make fretting easier on the finger tips because less pressure will be required. A more extreme idea would be to get yourself an electric guitar, put 9’s on it with low action – this will be the easiest yet. Use the electric off and on to give the finger tips some rest from (I imagine) your glorious Martin guitar with 12’s.

That was great, well done ! Nice Jerry tone on that Les Paul.

Wonderful Althea! Loved it. Of course now I want to hear you play Ripple, Uncle John’s Band and Dire Wolf!

I use 9’s on it, so it is easier to play than an acoustic with heavier strings. It’s less stressful on my fingers and hands, but when I have most of my reps in I can switch to the acoustic for the authentic Tony’s Acoustic Challenge tone.

Great song Brian, well played and well sung. Beautiful sentiments in the lyrics too.

Yep, much snappier for me too! I am on an iMac using the Safari browser. Thanks Tony and team!!

First of all, fret spacing depends on a guitar’s scale length – and 99% of the time that scale length will either be 25.4/5″ or 24.75″. Your Alvarez is 25.5 and I believe in last week’s exercises Tony was playing his Santa Cruz Vintage Southerner which is 24.75. So yes, what you are noting is correct – he has less of a stretch than you do on your guitar.

I mostly refer to the tab but I think I know why. I played trumpet from 4th through 8th grade, and for that you are always reading and playing from sheet music. So even at age 57 when I started playing guitar I think my brain was pre-wired to look at spots on a page in order to figure out where to place my fingers.

Yeah I agree with BluesLife – I think it’s the loading of the videos that takes time, and you wait for everything to get fully loaded because it would be worse to have the video freeze and glitch while you are trying to do a lesson. I think the only thing that might speed up the loading would be paying the server/host thousands more per month to get that snappy response time we all like. I doubt it’s a bug/tuning issue at this point so far from the last release. But who knows – Tony and Levi do care and are no doubt looking at their options for now, and for the next release. (Note the site has been overhauled several times since the beginning.)

Well when I started out about 10 years ago I thought I had to stick to 24.75″ scale, because 25.4 felt too much of a stretch, mostly of course in the upper portion of the neck near the nut. So at the time I got a Martin HD-28 but with a short scale (24.75) which was a custom option. However, after several years of doing Tony’s daily challenges low and behold my left hand ‘stretched’ and got better at making the reaches needed and so now I can play both scale lengths without problems. I still have the HD-28 which is a fine guitar, but also a standard sized D-42.

Yes nut to bridge, but I go by the ‘official’ specs listed on the guitar company’s website. So your guitar’s scale length is ‘officially’ 25.5. Now this does not determine body size – a Martin D-28 which is a full sized dreadnaught. has a scale length of 25.4, but your smaller body sized guitar is 25.5, or 25.75 as you measured it.
