I know that ‘a poor workman blames his tools’ but you said you have a Kona beginner guitar which might not be right for you or might be setup poorly. Take it to a guitar store and show them the problems you are having. They might recommend a setup, or even a new guitar. You might not be ready to buy a new guitar but if they put something in your hands which allows you to play more easily, then you have learned something.

Maybe it’s the fingernails. The nails should be short enough so they don’t touch the fretboard when forming a chord. Otherwise, the nail will touch the fretboard and the finger tip will ‘lean’ into the string below as it tries to press down on the string you are aiming for.

First and foremost the point of the Daily Challenges is to just keep you playing. Nearly everyone here has stories of stopping and starting guitar over the course of their lifetimes, TAC is offering a way to just keep you playing – 10 mins, 5 days a week by just following the program, don’t think about it. If you start picking and choosing the daily exercise I think that will cause disruptions, discontinuity and risk your ‘sobriety’. I’ve been on the program for 7 years and it works.

From those you choose songs to learn so you can focus on timing, strum pattern, etc rather than on just struggling with the change. But also, you can develop new chords by doing Tony’s Day 5 challenge and focusing on chord transitions that you want to add to your chord arsenal. So for you, sure the Cadd7 can be used in your songs now while you work on the garden variety C in transition exercises.

Yes, glad to hear you are going to ask your doctor. You are on them for a reason, and note there are different statins, one might give you side effects and another might not but all will help your cardiovascular health. Been on atorvastatin for 12 years since my heart attack, doing fine. My wife did have to switch statins because her liver numbers were going up, but found a good one. Her recent heart calcium score was zero ! Note I do not work for a drug company, lol.

I’d like to second that – I use Ernie Ball Earthwood acoustic strings too but I take it a step further and use the Extra Lights (10 – 50). They sound just fine and are easier on my old hands and fingers. One exception is my Martin D-42 where I stick to mediums. It’s more of a ‘performance’ guitar, not one for practicing.

You know another factor of course is age. I am 68 and am facing this – I can’t do everything, I have to choose. If you plan on playing and just choose to focus on the flat picking, and it looks like you are past 50 anyway, that’s a good strategy. Just save your favorite flatpicking exercises and repeat those on a fingerpicking day.
