You are in Flatpicking jumpstart in the skills courses where I’ve been for a couple months. Still new and had to get away from the challenges until I feel more comfortable.

For every lesson, I’ve had the “TAB” icon come up next to the “Heart” shaped icon just below the small window with Tony instructing. I’ve got the TABS on every lesson here.

I’m playing Billy in the low ground for part of my warm up. Hope you get the TABS! It is so much easier! Good luck!

  • I’m 4 months in and feeling good. I Did the 30 days, 5 day routine, and some of the daily challenges. I’m working my way through the “Skills courses.” This last Monday under “Getting Started” I saw “Strumming Jumpstart.” Today after lesson 4, I smiled and chalked up one for the Win column. If you haven’t worked through this one, I’d suggest to take a look. I print out the TABS so I can make notes of what Tony is saying.

Very Timely! I just told myself an hour ago, “OK Steve, time to move on!” As a Greenhorn still “Wet behind the Ears” beginner at 67, I spent seven weeks in the 30 days to play, then 2 weeks on the 5-day Routine before reluctantly hitting the “completed” box. I go back to the Shuffle, Baseline, Boogie, and Scales for a warm up every time I sit down. I’m picking up the speed and accuracy as the days go by. I have this guitar on my lap every day for at least a couple hours, being retired and all. Tony is a good motivator.

I just spent the last week on my 1st daily challenge which, in my mind, should have been a bit further down the road for me. I give each day a good effort, a pat on my back, and a smile for the progress I’ve made. I am amazed and wish I had been playing for 40 years.

It seems most responses you read here say “Move On, you can come back later.” I’m learning to take that advice. I picked up a couple song books, hopefully by the fall I’ll be sitting round the campfire testing the vocals!

I’m a newbie and I felt the same way for sure. Tony keeps saying there is no schedule or time frame here; just encouragement and motivation to move along. I need to remember that I’m not in a rush. It was 7 weeks before I checked completed on the 30 days. I just spent over 2 weeks on the 5-day guitar routine before checking complete.

I’ve moved along at “my pace” and am amazed at my progress, definitely not perfection. I start out each session with the shuffle, baseline, boogie, scale, and chords. I’m getting better! Then move on to the rest.

I do have the luxury of being retired and am able to sit here with the guitar for an hour plus, almost every day. This was something to pass the time over the Alaska winter, but has turned into a very nice habit! Dare I say obsession? Take it easy on yourself!

Thank you Kim and Albert! I definitely made a wrong turn by going to the 6 chords. I turned around and went into the 5-day routine challenge. I’m enjoying the ride!

On my 4th week here. I saw what you see in the lesson with the shuffle. Confused me. Tony starts out with the easiest 2 strings for us beginners to strum, the E & A. Once he gets us going on that then he drops down to the harder A & D, D & G, pairs of strings. You’ll see that in other lessons. The TABs aren’t going flow in the pattern as the lesson.

I got out a tablet with lines and draw up my own TAB for each lesson with fingers, frets, and strings. I can’t read music so don’t need the notes yet.

That’s a problem for me too. I’m using my ring finger for now. It’s just a short jump to the 5th fret with index anyway.

I’m coming up on the end of week 2. Every time I sit down I start back on week 1 and rehearse the Shuffle, the Baseline, and the Boogie again and again with play through before moving on to the next lesson. This beginner is hearing improvement and I’m starting to smile, a little bit anyway. I’m still hitting wrong strings but getting better. The chords are getting easier too. At 67 these fingers are starting to listen. Amazing!

Thank you, there it is! I’m sure everything is spelled out for me somewhere that I missed.
