@Bud6333 I starting writing my own music several years ago for the first time and have used a couple of resources. One that Tony mentioned on an Accoustic Tuesday episode on Song Writing is Andrea Stolpe. I find her suggestions helpful. You might also look on facebook in your area as there are often local song writing groups. One final suggestion that has helped me is looking for open mic events in your area that are focused on singer songwriters. You can perform or just attend and meet people who will likely know of local resources. I encourage you to keep pursuing writing your own songs – I have received a lot of enjoyment from it. Here is Andreas Instagram site

I really struggled playing with a pick and either strummed with fingers or finger picked. My breakthrough came with the following habit. Anytime I went to guitar center I would grab a couple of their free branded picks they keep at the cash register. Pretty soon I had them in my pockets, in the car, around the house. I would not play with them – I would just hold them as if I was playing. Even driving the car. After about a month I could hold a pick as if it was an extension of my hand vs feeling foreign. I can now play with a pick with a lot more confidence. Give it a try!

@DiscostewLA Music is medicine for the soul ! I dont have words to express how much it has helped me emotionally over the past couple of years to have the TAC lessons, a guitar to play, and this supportive community! Thanks for listening!

@bugmeist thanks so much for listening and kind feedback. One of the first songs I wrote and seems to strike a chord with a lot of folks who have similar relationships with parents or other important figures in their lives. So far there have been listeners in over 20 countries around the world.

@stevieblues he was a great man. He passed in 2020 and I can honestly say that writing music to express my feelings helped me in so many ways to process grief in a healthy and healing way !

@Loraine Wow – I have never had someone describe the song with so much insight as you have provided. You are spot on to what I was feeling and trying to convey. Thank you so much for listening with so much intention and sharing your feedback – that means a lot to me ! Thanks!

@stevieblues thanks ! TAC just keeps adding to my tool chest and I try to apply something new each time a song is released. This set of songs had some big steps forward for me.

@Loraine thanks so much for the nice comments! Speaking of inspiration your playing, strumming, timing, and singing is on an exponential improvement trajectory! Congratulations on all your hard work. Your comment comes at a great time because I have learned that after I release music those demons creep in with “not good enough, should be better etc”. Funny you mention NPR because I saw Ira Glass last night and he shared this which is so appropriate for all of us in the the Guitar Geek Community. This is what he wrote and talked about:
“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners. I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be. It has potential. But your taste — your taste is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you.
“A lot of people never get past this phase. They quit. Most people I know who do interesting creative work went through years of this. Our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you’re just getting started or you are still in this phase, you gotta know it’s normal, and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline, so that every week, you will finish one project. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap and your work will be as good as your ambitions. It’s gonna take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.” Ira Glass
It was just the message I needed to hear last night! Thanks again for all the support!

@Philb hey thanks for clicking on a few. When you get more time (like that ever happens 😆) maybe a road trip of something…. let me know what you think. It is funny based on some of the early feedback – many people have noted their favorite was a song I almost did not record because I thought it might be too personal. “First To Go” seems to be landing with a lot of people and their own experience. Anyway… I really appreciate the support of this community !
