@JenRho congratulations for continuing along your guitar journey – many people dont make that first step and instead surrender to the voices of doubt and frustration. They set the guitar down, never to be picked up again. I would ask you to revisit one of your early statements and from there many other items will fall in place.
“I know I’ll never be a great musician” hmm – think about that for a minute. What is a “great musician”? A virtuoso ? Many virtuosos are not that successful monetarily. One who has gold records or fills a stadium of ticket paying fans ? Many “stars” are not great musical technicians. I will tell you my definition. It is someone who decides later in life to try something new, then sits by the bedside of her Nana and plays music to bring her joy. There you have one of the greatest musicians of all time.
It flows from intent. If your intent is to bring yourself and others joy through music then everything that flows from that is pure, and good enough. Every wrong note, every forgotten chord. I can tell you when I got to the point of playing live paying gigs I realized people actually dont mind the occasional mistake that is obvious (as you stated, most mistakes are not even noticed). I have learned to own them, joke about them, because those listening all of a sudden feel like the they are apart of something real, organic, happening right then, right now and it draws them in closer to the creative process.
The nerves will always be there a bit. Just remember nerves come from a place of wanting to give to others your very best, and what every comes through your performance will be good enough.

@Bill1am Losing a parent hits pretty hard on so many levels. Glad you were able to be with family and also find a way to get your fingers on some strings. Take care.

same boat….
My breakthrough was having a pick in every pocket. Driving a car, hold a pick. Watching TV, hold a pick. After about 2 months of that the pick didn’t feel like a foreign object to me anymore. Instead it felt more like an extension of my hand

@jorgemac thanks so much ! I did a quick beginner lesson with Adam Gussow. I will try this other teacher out. thanks for the recommendation!

Doing my best !!

Thanks @Loraine – All good suggestions. I did start day 1 of FBW a few days ago. I cant do any of the exercises physically but I can mentally go through the motions. I did get my lyric journal out and started scribbling down some thoughts, and I do have a pretty good keyboard that I record with. Shoot me a message with your address and I will send you some CDs !

Thanks @jumpinjeff . I got a similar suggestion from a fellow TAC’r about keeping a journal through recovery to keep myself moving forward and on track. I am going to do it !

@petelanger well you have a great ear ! I wrote this song several years ago but it was not until I was learning Mr Bojangles this summer that I realized I had pretty much used the exact chord progression. I have a few variations of shapes but it is essentially the same. Then I went on to find that chord progression in other songs as well. Nothing new under the sun I guess !

hey there Loraine – hope all is well. I have been absent for a bit. Had a nasty bike crash with multiple right shoulder fractures and hyperextended all the fingers on my left hand. It will be months before I can even hold a guitar again and I hope I can get everyting working. But on that happy note……. you are correct – I did pass the over the “i cant use a pic” bridge awhile back and so glad I did. It opened up so many more creative avenues for me. My not so secret secret was to put pics everywhere around me. In the car, coffee tables, in my pockets etc. Almost like one of those “fidget” spin’y things. I just always had one in my hand and over time it felt less like a foreign object and more like an extension of my fingers. It’s worth a try.
