@reachcast Good thread. It is a very common problem being able to play on demand and remember chord progression and lyrics, and yes as pointed out in comments above, most of us use printed material in virtual open mics that we might attend. Even at in person open mics many players use printed material to assist. I just had this exact thing happen to me when I went back to visit friends and family in Indiana and Illinois. A friend asked if I would bring my guitar. Knowing that I won’t remember even the first chord, let alone any lyrics, I took a binder with printed chord sheets – didn’t do me any good. As soon as I tried playing, my thoughts got jumbled and I couldn’t play, and I couldn’t get my voice above a whisper. It’s a dream of mine to pull out the guitar and just play unemcumnered – Praxtice, practice, practice. Have your significant other, kids, or a best friend be your audience as you practice.

My thoughts on memorizing songs. To learn and remember a song, break it down. Start with just the chord progression and melody. Play it until you have it memorized (I visualize the paper. It’s like reading tThe chord sheet, but in my head. Once you have this down, add the lyrics. First, make sure you know the lyrics in full before adding them.Break it down by verses and chorus and bridge. Be able to play the 1st verse and vocals before moving forward.

The TAC daily lessons are meant to teach you foundational skills and for practice every day. Whether you remember it or not is not the issue. Even without recall of the material, your mind and muscles paid attention and were taught the material. You will have progressed in your learning.

Hope you’re finding some gems in all the posts.

@Greg_Weber Congratulatioms on your 1 year of playing guitar milestone! It is true with just about any new hobby or skill, but especially guitar that we see so many drop off within the first year. The first year is always the toughest, i it ijs when we’re just being introduced to the guitar and feeling on top of the world, and then when we realize it isn’t as easy as we thought, and it was going to take a lot of practice (especially scales, learning to use a pick or finger style, different skills and patterns, etc. that the initial excitement turns into fear or not wanting to practice and put in the work to learn guitar and get better.

@Happy-Jack Yes, there are a multitude of picking patterns. They define how a somg wiwll sound, and there are typically 1-3 patterns that might work for a particular somg.

PIMA is just the acronym for Thumb, Indes, Middle and Ring fingers. Most pick patterns will incorporate all four, but it is not uncommon to see a pick pattern that includes just PIM, Thumb, Index, Middle. It is just a preference, I think.

@tommytheT Welcome to the TAC community. Is there some reason you don’t want to learn to play with a pick? Tony’s lessons cover the use of picks and fingerpicking, but he doesn’t really show finger strumming. There have been others that never played with a pick, but they stuck with TAC and learned the different skills. Why not expand your skill set and learn to play with a pick?

Tony monitors the forums, so he might read your post. You can message Support by clicking on the link at the bottom left, or add Victoria in support to your post/question by adding moniker @VictoriaTACTeam and ask your questions for Tony.

@richs52yahoo-com It just comes with lots of practice, and I agree with slowing it down and having an open string strum while your fretting hand changes chords. There are drills you can do to make sure your landing all your fingers of a chord at the same time. Then there is minimal time needed to change chords, because you’ll have the muscle memory to land the chord in one shot.

@jackhey52gmail-com Welcome to the TAC community! You’re not missing anything, except the 3 videos that used to be part of the practice videos. TAC updated its site a while back, and they new site either didn’t allow for the 3 videos or it became unnecessary, because the videos have playback speeds now. At the bottom right of videos, you’ll see a 1x. This indicates that your video is playing at normal speed. You can slow it down or speed it up by clicking on the 1x and adjusting the playback speed.

I’ve heard good things about Zager, and there are several TACers that have purchased them. There is more space between strings, and that’s what makes them good finger style guitars. If you have specific questions about the guitar, you can always reach out directly to Zager too.

@Moose408 Congrats on 25 days! That is a great win. I’m not sure what your travel entails, but if you’re unable to take your guitar with you, there are still practice that you can do without a guitar. Therefore, you could still continue your streak by logging in every day, and you can air guitar, watch some videos, read posts on the forum and provide some support to others, finger scales, study Fretboard Wizard if you own it, or Google some guitar theory.

If you choose to take the few days off, the guitar will understand and be there when you return. Have a good trip.

If you can’t figure out the name of the lesson for last Wednesday let me know. I screenshot all the lessons. It probably wouldn’t be till tomorrow that I’d get it to you, because I’m at the Outlaw Music Fest right now.

That’s great @LoveMyHoodie . I finally organized most of my papers and put them in binders. I do much better with paper copies than relying on the computer. I’m just old school like that.

@LoveMyHoodie I thought you did a fabulous job playing this, and especially picking on a 12 string. Happy new guitar day too! Have you showed off the guitar on the forums? What make/model? Photos?

So, you’re a perfectionist and an innovator (picks from a plastic coffee can lid. Were you an engineer?

    Please see attached exercises.

Chord and Finger Independence Exercises (attachments)

    – when doing these, it’s more important to be precise rather than fast

To build speed with chord changes, put a metronome on and alternate between two chords tons of times. Strum on beat 1 for each chord (counting to 4)

Love the backstory! Now you’ve got enough for a whole lotta picks! Enjoy!
