  1. I gotta say, I really enjoy playing this tune. Something about it is just very relaxing and peaceful. Granted, that peacefulness is not conducive to getting up to speed, but I am enjoying working on it.

  2. Hey Tony, really enjoying learning this song, just need to get the outdo up to speed and should be ready to record and post my performance. Hope you and yours are staying safe and healthy.

  3. Yes, I’m still working on this song.. OK I’m SLOW! 😀 QUESTION: Is it just me, or does the “slow” demo of this song start out fairly slow, maybe 95 to 100 bpm, then gradually speed up throughout the song, until hitting about 116 to 120 at the end? Is that what’s considered “easing into faster speeds?” 😀 ha ha!

    1. Heidi,

This was before the days of using a metronome to record with… seems crazy that I never did 🙂 There are plans in the works to rerecord the older lessons… and a little birdie told me that there is a full lesson of The Smoke Has Cleared coming soon 🙂

      Cheers,
      Tony

  4. I’ve always loved this song, back from when first hearing it during Tony’s guitar reviews!

I’ve read several comments that indicate this song is scheduled for a “make-over” one of these days.

With that in mind, two things to consider: One thing that would help a LOT, would be a “count-in” on the video “play along” demo’s, like is done with daily lessons. If it’s too much trouble to “count in” for each section, then at least provide it for both the “slow” and “fast” versions of the final complete song! 😀
Secondly, many of the 2-measure chunks are demo’d nice and slow, but the “slow” version of complete song is much faster than the “slow” of the “chunks” of song, which makes it difficult to transition from “chunks” to playing the whole song. (I THOUGHT I was starting to get a fairly good handle on this song, until encountering that “slow” version of the complete song, which left me in the dust! 😀 )

I HOPE to get this worked out well enough to “play along” at the “slow” speed before long. Part of MY problem is I enjoy the lushness of the song more, when hearing it “slow” (116 to 120 bpm or so) vs. “fast”, so am not as motivated to work on speed as I might be for some songs! 😀 IMHO, the “slow” version of the song allows more time for the individual notes to ring out and be appreciated, than the “fast” version. 😀 And no, I’m not just making excuses for my slow-crawl playing! 😀

  5. Tony
LOVE IT! In less than a day I have everything up to fast speed except the ending…timing throwing me a bit.
JUST one comment…in the performance you play lines 1 & 2 two times before the descending chromatic in line 3. No one above said anything and it was easy to catch but FYI. I found it when I tried to play along with you and started sounding off..doh!

  6. Tony, this is a cool song! What a great sound! I love that my guitar vibrates so much while playing this.
The speed will come hopefully before the end of the month! Goal to look forward to!
Learning songs is better for me right now than trying to provide a solo (don’t know where to begin).

Thank you for the great lessons.

    1. Julie,

I am glad you dug this song!!! The speed will come for certain, and as far as the solos go. Try first just playing the scale in a linear fashion over the backing track, knowing it might not sound awesome… after you get comfy with that start to try an thread together notes that sound good. There are no right or wrong ways to do it, just give it your best shot and know that it is pure experimentation 🙂

      Cheers,
      Tony

  7. Hey Tony,
Frustration is over!!!! Learned this song in one day ( over many hours). Love the open D tuning and the finger picking. Excellent layout of instructions ( In bits ) makes it easy to learn. I can play the whole thing ( slowly ) but the ending is a little tricky. It may take me awhile to make it sound great with no flaws but at least I have a practice goal. Thanks for the encouragement in the email. Looking forward to more.

    1. Brian,

I am so glad to hear that you made it!!! Great job and I am happy to hear that the small bits helped you get this whole thing!!! Great work!!! Keep it up!!!

      Cheers,
      Tony

  8. That was my first some completed using TAC. What a blast! I really appreciated the repeated picking pattern which made it a little easier for me to learn. Thanks for the great lesson. I really enjoyed the open-D tuning.

  9. Wow, what a fun tune. I know the entire thing, and now I can play everything but the ending pretty much up to speed. The ending is epic (awesome in Tony-eese:) ) so I will keep plugging away until I get it to speed. This was an awesome lesson. TY Tony

  10. What a beautiful piece of music Ohh my goodness am I pleased to have worked through learning this
is there more to this piece?
Joel I managed to clear this challenge to day Thanks for your work to fix it

  11. What a cracker of a tune! Loved learning this one, especially in the open tuning. I dint venture too far from standard tuning normally, so it’s good to step outside the box!

  12. Fantastic! The first time I’ve ever stuck with learning something on guitar till my fingers actually hurt so much I couldn’t play any more! Might have to switch to my nylon strung cort at this rate… Cheers to the whole team … this might actually work… I may even learn to play guitar!

  13. Final section of four measures on first and second frets followed by the ‘big bang’ exit is a little tricky getting the rhythm, but especially figuring out the right hand fingering. I think I have it down; at least it sounds okay to me, but could be off slightly as to which strings I should be plucking with the right hand.

  14. I’m unable to access lesson 8-when clicked it keeps reverting back to lesson 7. As a result I can’t mark the entire lesson complete because 8 is unchecked.

    1. Hey Don,
I’m really sorry this is happening. I’m trying to get to the bottom of it right now. Would you try something for me? Could you try to log out and then log back in, and then attempt to clear this challenge again? Thanks!
