Last night for the “Disaster,” “May Day” theme of TAC SNL, I played no. 5 of my 12 (at least) Woody Guthrie songs for this year, and it is his protest stated in ‘first person’ to add to the impact and horror of the events of 1914 (and hundreds of other “battles” in the Trade Union movement’s history).

Unfortunately, my home state has periodically done things like this in the disputes between different ideologies. At the time, a topical publication ‘Masses’ put this on the cover:

    Masses 1914 John Sloan.jpgtes

Guthrie wrote the song 30 years after the events, as he came out of the Army, and like many Trade Union protest songs, this one relies on the truth and horror more than the tunefulness of the protest songs of the 60’s and 70’s we grew up with.

    Not easy to hear.

Thanks TJ for sharing this at our 5/1/2021 Mayday! Mayday! theme night on SNL virtual open mic. You did great delivering such a horrible and depressing song topic. 😀

That was such a tragic story song. Guthrie didn’t mince words in his protests which made him so famous. Thanks for sharing.
