Hey guys! I’m on day 2 of my guitar journey. I circled back to the blues shuffle tonight to recap. As I’m watching Tony’s fingers I realize the frets on his neck are closer together than the ones on mine. I was struggling last night with getting my ring finger stretched out enough when alternating between index finger and ring finger.

Do I need a new guitar so I’m not struggling right off the bat?

@513604 Not necessarily (short answer). You could start with some stretching exercises to loosen up to improve stretches, and you’ll find that the more you play the better your finger span becomes. Stretching lessons – https://tonypolecastro.com/courses/guitar-players-daily-stretch-guide/

Totally agree with Loraine’s post about doing the stretching exercises. For what it’s worth, try to keep your left arm as straight as you can while stretching- you’ll see the difference it makes. Caution- go easy on this at the start- you can hurt yourself.

    My two cents- Mark J

The ring finger is problematic for all of us when starting out. Follow the stretching recommendations and give it some time. Your fingers will cooperate eventually. It’s not something you can rush.
