  • A Major Barre … help needed

Posted by Sparky1 on June 27, 2021 at 1:45 pm

I am having big problems with the A Major Barre chords. My ring finger on my fretting hand is abbreviated just after the last knuckle. I can’t fret the three strings needed because of the last bit of finger that is missing. Hoping for a workaround…any ideas are welcome.

I often use my pinky and ignore the high E string.

The pinky idea’s a good workaround. I have difficulty with the A-shaped barre chord having the full use of my ring finger, and my workaround has been to supplement it with my ring finger to help hold the strings down.

Are you trying to barre an open A (5 string barre) of 6 string A?

@Sparky1 : There is a nice index finger bar that I use. 2nd fret bar the DGBE strings and reach your pinky to fret 5 on the high E string (making it an A note) I like this position chord because it lets me explore the A6, A7, Amaj7 chords changing the note on the high E string. In my mind I keep the shapes organized by thinking of this as a G shape A chord (when I use my index finger on the bar) and if I am using my Ring or Pinky to bar DGB I think of it as an A shaped chord.

Hi @Sparky1 , sorry to hear about your ring finger. I think that @JohnV has given you the best work-around for your situation. And, on the plus side, you’ll have a really strong pinkie as a result😎

Everybody….thank you for responding to my question. I’m confused about not fretting the high e. That is not where the challenge is. I can not fret the D,G, and B because of the stubby tip of my ring finger. In this case 2 out of 3 doesn’t sound very pleasant.
