  • Chord Changes?

Posted by Cisco on October 16, 2021 at 8:57 pm

I’m coming back to guitar after a 30 year gap spent working and raising children and all that entails. I’ve been slowly chugging through the 30 days lessons. So, last night I dug out some of my old guitar songbooks and realized that some of the chords are different. So far, I’ve run into two. The B string on the G chord isn’t used in my old books. So what changed? The thing is, when I started playing that chord without using the B string, my fingers naturally flowed better to other chords. It just works smoother to keep that pointer finger free for the next chord. Also, in my books, the D7 chord and the D chord are switched around. It’s no problem to learn the new chords, but doing that G chord the old way, really helps me with chord transitions. So, is it OK to use that older G chord or will I be learning something later on that will make me regret not adding the B string?

Hi @Cisco , it’s perfectly okay to make the chords the other way, but there are many different ways to make certain chords, and you may want to learn them all, because one may sound better in a song than another.

Hi @Cisco , welcome to TAC. I hope you find everything you’re looking for along your journey here. I agree with @Loraine , you play those chords the way you remember. Like you, I use the 3 finger G when I play. The only time I use the 4 finger G is when I have to because of a picking pattern. In fact, I never saw the 4 finger version until joining TAC. When I saw it, I just treated it like a new chord – learn it – use it when you have to. So don’t stress over it, just keep it fun😎
