Well…. I retook the test, multiple times. I tried playing every string in low E to get the key. Some were easy because all choices started w/ the same key. Next I’d listen to the tonality; happy or sad. Then I’d try to see if the music was going up or down in tone so that I could tell if the note on low E was hi or low sounding.

    Nothing worked.

Tried it again. Didn’t work. I’m now getting 0 correct.

I repeated the test 2 more times. I thought maybe I could understand it like I taught myself Calculus years ago. Get the answer and go backwards. But I was getting “incorrect” on every single answer choice for questions. Question # 3 said I had it right but when I repeated the test, and I input ‘answer’, it said “incorrect.”

OK – I don’t know where the keys are on low E by memory, so that is a big hinderance. I assume I’m suppose to use low E for finding the key, like the lesson did.

    So..after venting… I feel better….. but just wondering if I’m not alone.

If you’re unable to find the key on the low E, try finding it on the high E instead. Same process. It just takes practice.

Hi Ursula, Keep in mind that when you re-do the quizzes, the questions come up in a different order each time – so question #3 the first time will not be the same question the next time – the questions will be the same, but always in a different order each time.

Also, make sure your guitar is tuned properly. Use the hiE string also as @Loraine said. On the hi/lo E strings, 1st fret = F, 3rd fret = G, 5th = A, 7th = B, 8th = C, 10th = D. I also used the A string too on occasion. Make sure that the volume on your computer is up hi enough so that you can hear everything – some of the recordings aren’t the best sound quality.

As far as major vs. minor, in the materials section there is a major & minor scale pattern (that are moveable). Once you’ve settled on a key for a song, then play one of the scale patterns in that key – if the notes sound good with the song, then you’ve nailed it! For me, I memorized the major scale pattern and would play that in the key that I settled on – if it sounded slightly off, then I would choose that key in minor as my answer. If it sounded really off, then I knew I had chosen the wrong key altogether. For example, if I thought the song was in the key of A, then I would play the major scale pattern starting on the 5th fret of the low E string. If it sounded good with the song, then I was confident that I made the right choice.

    Hope this helps. Good luck!

LOL, I didn’t know that about the answers.

I’m moving on and hoping the next lesson doesn’t build too much on this past one.

@campfire The redoing the quizzes are indeed sneaky that way. It took me a while to get the right answers but that reinforces the learning process. Don’t give up and take your time with it. I am looking forward to the new FW 2.0 – Tony indicated those of us who already purchased 1.0 will get the 2.0 without any additional payment. 😉

@campfire, no worries, you are not alone!! This is a skill that is not easy to master and it can take alot of practice before it becomes easier for you. I found some of the songs in the “real world challenge” to be very difficult to pin down the key and/or the chords, but hey I am still a beginner at this skill as well.

I’d say keep practicing the Fretboard Wizard exercises (practice is usually the correct answer). And one thing to add is to look up on YouTube “What key is the song Let it Be”, find the song, make a play list of about 10 songs in that same manner, so by the time you listen to each song you might have forgotten the right answer…. Once you are ready, listen to each song and try to figure out the key. It helps to use slower softer songs, and/or songs you like to listen to. This is just a suggestion to give you extra practice at the same Fretboard Wizard style exercises, using all kinds of different songs.

Best wishes, and keep trying- it gets easier I promise!!

That’s a good idea about looking up the keys of songs.

      Thanks!

I hadn’t seen where Fretboard Wizard was being offered again. Did i miss something? I have been wanting to take the course. The last time I saw it offered, a long time ago, I couldn’t do it then. Any information is welcome.
The best to you in the course @campfire

Hi Phil, I was wondering the same thing so I contacted support and this was their response: Thanks for reaching out! I’ll be happy to help. Tony mentioned on the recent live Guitar Party that currently Fretboard Wizard 2.0 is in the works. Once that has been completed and it’s ready for TAC Members to enroll, we’re going to be posting announcements for it. We anticipate that to be in a few months, but we do not have a date as yet.

I’m hoping it will be soon. I’ve been wanting to take that course for a year now.🙂

Well, I moved on to the next lesson, Transposing. much easier!! It’s like balancing chemical equations, which I always loved. However, be careful w/ the “Real World Challenges.” The first step is to listen to a song and decide what key it is in. Well, that’s where I was 0/5 correct. Guess I’ll go back to the previous lesson and redo it. …in a few days.
