  • Small Win – First Barre Chord

Posted by BecerraP on February 9, 2022 at 4:17 pm

I started working through the Barre Chord 5 Day Challenge and have been doing the Limbering up exercise for 3 days now. In today’s Daily Challenge, I was able to actually play the Gm chord! Woohoo!

I couldn’t do it consistently, but was able to do it a few times and it was the first time I’ve been able to play a barre chord and have all the notes ring the way they should. I’ll keep at it, but this little thing made me so happy today. 😃

That is so exciting @BecerraP ! The first time will be as exciting each time. Soon, you’ll have found that sweet spot and be able to play that barre chord nearly perfect each time. Remember the feeling, especially if you go through periods where you can’t seem to play them at all. Great work!

@BecerraP, you give me hope, Barre chord are difficult for me and if you can make progress then I know I can. It is great to hear your triumph!

Thanks for the encouragement @Loraine @MoochasPoochas and @Duane58 , – I haven’t been able to repeat that barre chord yesterday or the ones today, but I’ll keep working on it. Doing it a couple of times made me sure I will get it eventually.

I know the feeIing! Barre chords are hard on acoustic, less so on electric. But do bear in mind there is just SO much you can do without them that you shouldn’t beat yourself up too much if you don’t get them for a while. I just posted a Play For Us called The Coming Storm that uses mostly double stops (two note chords) and drone strings. Works a dream.

Just one last tip if you really want to learn barres I have been told by a very experienced guitarist you should start by learning power chords. Tony does have power chords in one of the tutorials but apparently if you can’t play these three note chords, you will struggle with barres. They are a kind of stepping stone to getting your hands ready for the full stretch. Worth a try and something I’m going to do this year to see if I can make any progress. Take care and keep on rockin’ 🤟😎🎸

    Good for you, BecerraP!

I’m in the same boat. Been working on the 5 Day Challenge myself. Same thing. I can get the exercises fine one time, then not the next time. But it gives me hope.

    Keep working.

Keep up the good work. Knowing barre chords is so important and really not all THAT hard. Plus, once you get them down you can play Major, Minor, Dominant 7ths, Major 7ths, Minor 7ths and even Diminished chords super easy all up and down the neck! Good things ahead!
