  • Dungeon of Despair solo, over backing track

Posted by Archie750 on February 10, 2022 at 11:16 am

Hi all, so I thought I’d just plunge in at the deep end and post a video of me playing my very first solo over a backing track; ‘Dungeon of Despair’. Playing it back to myself I feel it’s a little ‘cringeworthy’, but you gotta start somewhere, right?

    The YouTube link is https://youtu.be/hqowVyOYKVE

All positive feedback greatly appreciated. I might even join the next 90 day party, if I feel brave enough!

@Archie750 Woohoo! Your 1st improv and fabulously done! Congrats on facing your fear and stepping up and out. I thought you did a great job, and it was very melodic with the backing track. I didn’t notice your nail scraping the strings. Just make sure your nails are trimmed back on your fretting hand, and consciously think about the placement of your index finger and try to reposition it where it’s not scraping the strings. This will feel awkward at first, but once the muscle memory sets in, you’ll be free to move about without interference. And as I’m known to say, Keep on plunking (instead of plucking).

Hi Archie750, I thought you did a great job with that improv – nice clear notes and backward rolls and a neat melody that use a lot of the scale and neck. Keep on posting! We need more Wednesday solos and improvs and your contributions are welcome!

Hey there and welcome to the forum from a fellow Englishman! Really pleased to hear you play and get a video up even if you’re a little wary. I did the same when I joined TAC in April last year and have been posting regularly since. I do it so I can look back on earlier posts and witness my progression. I’m blown away with how far I’ve got from those early fumbling attempts.

That said I think you did a great job on this one. Your movement about the fretboard was superb, chord shapes locked in and timing was good too. And please do go to the next 90 day party in April if you can. You will get a chance to listen to Tony talking to TAC members and sharing insights and news but my favourite part is the breakout rooms in the middle where you meet 3 or 4 fellow TAC members randomly allocated, and just have a chance to chat. There is no pressure at all, just a good way to see where you’ve got to, set some new goals and meet some friendly folks. Have fun – Darren (Moonhare) 🤟😎🎸

Welcome to TAC, @Archie750 ! You played very nicely on your first TAC solo. I heard very little or no despair in you Dungeons of Dispair playing! Clean finger picking of those rolls and nice changes along the scale throughout. Looking forward to more of your posts. 👍
