  • Success with the Call And Response lick

Posted by N-lightMike on March 22, 2022 at 11:48 am

Wow, zowie, yikes. The “Call And Response” lick is so cool. I love this little lick. Why do I always like the hardest ones the best? Anyway, after almost 3 years with TAC, and focusing on finger picking the whole time, I can sorta, kinda play this lick. If I practice regularly for a week, maybe two, I’ll be able to play this in a song. So, that’s my goal.

I have done exercises on the guitar that strengthen my fingers and increase my finger independence. Most of those exercises are things I picked up from Tony’s lessons. I could never have done this lick before. But right away, I was able to do the pull off and hammer on in the first little flurry. That was surprising, but then I was able to do it at speed after a very short time.

The rest of it seemed like it was too much for me, but as usual, I gave it a try. More surprise, I was able to get the first 3 sequences down in the same fashion, without to much time or trouble and actually being able to do them in time.

Of course, when I tried to do that last stretch with the pinky, I realized I wasn’t going to be able to do the whole lick. But I tried harder, switched guitars, and lo and behold, I got that part also.

I am blown away by how much I’ve improved during my time here at TAC. Getting this lick down this well and this quickly really demonstrates my improvement so that even I can see it. Thank you Tony and thank you to all the community for the constant and wonderful support and encouragement.

Very nice win @MikeGaurnier ! This was a tough one that I wasn’t able to slay. Maybe next go around.

Thank you @Loraine , I really appreciate your constant encouragement. What I love about TAC is that everyone experiences improvement. One day, you will get this lick, I know you will. Why? Because you put in the time over time. That’s all I did.

@MikeGaurnier ; super fun to see those things that used to be mindblowingly challenging falling into place within the course of a ten minute playing session. 3 years made good right there. I also love how you conquered that old self limiting belief by continuing on as “usual” (good practice being reinforced by successful outcomes over time) and found that your initial assessment “seemed like it was to much for me” was not quite accurate. Instead your practiced adherence to what you knew had worked for you before, freeing you to dive in and meet the challenge. Kudos MG. You know this I am sure but I will write it anyway for my own benefit, last weeks Gauntlet Excercise will make that pinky stretch all the easier, dare I say, at will? Yes I am saying it. Throw that in for 10 minutes twice a day for two weeks and tell me it is not at will. Double Dog Dare You.

Thank you @jumpinjeff . I wouldn’t dispute with you about The Gauntlet. That became one of my regular warm ups the first time around. I still go back to it sometimes. That’s exactly what I was talking about when I said I’ve done exercises. My other fingers seem to be able to do anything my pinky can. I’ll tell you the other one I love, The Slide Away. It’s the Thursday one with just the pinky and ring finger. Boy, that’s still the toughest one for me. But I always do them together. After doing the Gauntlet, I like to focus on the ring and pinky.

But, yeah, I love that I kept thinking I wasn’t going to be able to do it but kept going anyway. I thought that was pretty cool. TAC has certainly helped me to have new attitudes.

@MikeGaurnier I am coming on my 3rd TACIVERSARY this month and I share with you the feeling of accomplishment that comes with certain Daily Challenges that used to take a great deal of time to just “get through”, but now are accomplished within the 10 minute window. And, because of the theoretical understanding from Fretboard Wizard, make sense enough to allow improvisation and and fiddling around. The system works and the music is fun. Great win.

Thank you @albert_d , it’s certainly the only program that worked for me. I said in another thread that I owe my guitar journey and musical life to TAC. It’s so much fun.
