What the F chord
Posted by HeyJude on April 4, 2022 at 9:16 pmAttempted the F major bar chord for the first time! I didn’t do too bad.
I have always passed up learning a song if I see bars…this will be what I need to stop that cycle 🙂
So glad I came across Tony and his teaching style…great teacher.

@HeyJude The more you practice the barre chords, the more you’ll build up finger strength and they’ll get easier. May still be a little daunting, but once you find the sweet spot, you’ll actually like them.

Way to go! Bar cords are definitely hard!
I would encourage you go ahead and play the song that has a cord or 2 that’s difficult for you. Don’t worry if you can’t play it perfect or you have to hesitate when transitioning to that cord. If you just play through the song, pretty soon the cord will start to sound better as your hand gets stronger and muscle memory kicks in. It’s more fun than just doing drills until you have the cord down. Plus you will learn a song you enjoy. Kim

Hello @HeyJude , very nice work with that full barred F chord. The barred F chord is simply an E chord shape with the index barring the 1st fret. If you move that E shape up the neck so that the index is barring the 3rd fret (G chord) or the 5th fret (A chord), you’ll find less tension from the strings on the index finger = an easier place on the neck to practice making the barred E shape and more success with playing and getting sound from barre chords. IMHO, I would suggest trying that for all barred chord shapes that you are learning, that’s how I did it years ago😎

Yeah, I used to have a problem with the F chord so I’d avoid those songs altogether, or if I was feeling really ambitious, transcribe it to another key. Now, knowing what I know, I’d probably just us a capo. It takes a while. Some days are better than others. Just keep at it and it will come.

Yeah that one is a big challenge. I am still finding myself avoiding it – like this week’s Friday challenge – but at some stage it will have to be conquered. Well done on your progress.

Great win! I recommend trying barre chords with a capo. This will bring the strings closer to fretboard and will really hone your finger muscle memory. 👍
