Well, I CAN say that really good fingertip calluses finally disappear after about about 5 weeks.

Gonna finally be back home day after tomorrow, red-eyeing back into Seattle, then headed out to our wonderfully-rainy Coast from there.

And CAN’T WAIT to get a guitar back in my hands!!!!!

I was able to come across a computer now & again in our travels- so I was able to jump in here and catch up on Forum goings-on. I think it’s FOMO😳—- gotta have it!

    So- the “question”…….

Any suggestions on re-starting/jump-starting? I realize it’s gonna take a week or so to get some calluses back- but I will “push” that. I have favoritized and printed all of January’s Daily Challenges- so I guess that’ll be where I start. Any thoughts about this?

I’m anxious to see how much/ if any, that I may have “lost”.

Welcome back @the-old-coach ! I understand the difficulty being away from my guitar. I had to go several months without playing when my tennis elbow and tendinitis flared up in 2021-2022. The calluses will build back In a short amount of time. I wouldn’t worry too much about doing January lessons. Just pickup with todays daily challenge and move forward. The lessons rotate back around about every 8 months.

You need a travel guitar. You don’t need anything fancy. I used to use my niece’s ‘First Act’ 1/4 size when I was on the road. It’s about the size of a ukulele. I’ll guess it cost $30 new. It didn’t hold a tune really good, but it was good enough for me when I was in a pinch. Welcome back.

Welcome back @the-old-coach ! Something you may want to work into your practice as you start back up is playing a song or two the you enjoyed and have down pretty well. Just an idea. Have fun!

Suggesting to keep present. Just do today’s lesson today. And If you still have time do this weeks warm up challenge too. It is a doozey in the best of ways. The past is the past. Your immediate past involves a fantastic trip. As long as you return to tried and true practice you will hit your stride when you do. Play for today, play for the moment at hand. Look forward to seeing what you missed when it rolls around again. You can feel the anticipation building, right?

All you lost you shall regain. Regain the same way you gained it to begin with….10 minutes at a time (wink). Overdo is as disadvantageous as underdo. Settle in, start walking, the path is clear.

Hey @the-old-coach , glad to see a post from you again. I agree with @Loraine , don’t worry about January – it’s gone – just start diggin in now. Maybe start going over FW2 to get the grey matter clickin (LOL).

Did you ever get that Mexican Strat? It sounded like a very good deal to me (with the amp), well worth the $$. Keep us posted!

Thank you ALL for your replies!

As far as the dailies goes, I think I’m gonna give a quick “once-over” during the usual warmup-part of a practice session- (maybe ~5 mins), mostly because they are “progressive”.

I think I’ve seen all but maybe the last week’s worth– from their last time thru.

And then do as you all say– just move on and grab onto what’s new, peek back into FBW2- to refresh my memory a little, and then also grab onto a couple of songs I can play- to put the “music-y” back into my head.

Full disclosure- part of our time was four days in Nashville watching and listening to music— some up-close— and got to see one of my all-time favorites at the Grand Ol’ Opry— Vince Gill!!! And THEN four more in New Orleans….

Mexican Strat- That whole damn thing has been sort-of a disappointment for sure. I think it’s all just a mirage…….. or a unicorn……… something…….. It’s there but isn’t. Frustrating for sure. I’m not countin’ on it happening anymore. One day “yes”, one day “maybe”, one day “we’re working on it”. I’ve all but given up- because I just don’t want to be that person who says “where’s the d*mn guitar”.

Anyway– thanks to all for your responses. I’m thinkin’ that “significant time away” from playing guitar happens to a LOT of people- (for various reasons)- and just needed advice on the right way to crank it back up…….
