Welcome to the Benchmark Progress Forum
Posted by Tony Polecastro on September 12, 2024 at 12:41 pmThis forum is a space for TAC Family members to share their benchmark play throughs and track their progress. Every month, we rotate through four “benchmark songs”, giving you a chance to record your performance and share it with the community—no matter how polished (or not!) it is. It’s all about showing how far you’ve come, getting encouragement from fellow players, and celebrating personal growth. Whether you’re a beginner or a little further a long, everyone’s welcome to join in and have fun improving together.

Looking forward to being part of this new forum with my fellow TACers.
-
Thanks for explaining this. Since I’m a newbie at TAC it seemed this forum was here all along but somehow empty. I will be contributing my highly flawed attempts to wrestle with my instrument over the weekend.
-
This is AWESOME. I’ve thought about how to do something just like this- (before & after’s of the same song)- but just don’t have the “electronics-computer-skills” to pull it off. Now, Tony and the TAC team are making this possible. This is cool stuff, indeed! As Tony says- it will be fun seeing our own progress as well as others’- and cheering each other on.

I’m a little weak in my ring and little finger, but way better on the others

if ever a question, the answer remains the same: play more.

I tried the acoustic challenge over a year ago but gave up . well here I am again. I’ve been learning Here comes the Sun for about a month now and have gotten about halfway through
-
This is my second time on this challenge and I can tell I have made progress so the process works. It is also fun to play.
-
Hi, different benchmark here I’m thinking. Just played along with ELP lucky man. Made me think of how that would not have been possible if not for beliveing in the process. It was great fun and something I do quite often. Thank You Tony.

I think this is my third time through ‘Old Man”. The first time I made do with the basic chords: (line 1 of So Much More). The second time I got the hang of line 2 and have been playing that as part of the whole song myself at times in the last few months. I had forgotten about the existence of the line 3 variant, which I had previously decided was beyond me – but this time it seemed quite straight forward – well relatively speaking. So the process works. I know that I am slower than I would have been if I took guitar up when I was a kid, like I should have done, but at 69, I can still see progress and am also having fun encouraging my grandson to start playing.

So it appears that the comments under the Challenge have been removed and now we are to come the the Benchmark forum to share experiences. This happened between yesterday(12/17/24) and today (12/18/24)

Is there a video on TAC to learn the benchmark songs?
-
Hi – at thebeginning of this video, Tony said they come around in the monthly challenges. Ain’t no Sunshine is coming up next week. .

yes that is correct. Sunshine is next week and is this months benchmark challenge. There will be a different benchmark next month.
-
Hi Tonia!
I have looked in the challenges for the month and don’t see the benchmark song. When will Ain’t No Sunshine be taught so we can make our videos. Or where can we access the lesson ?
Thx!

Where do you find the video and tabs for these songs?
-
I am new to TAC and I do not quite get how this works. Do the daily challenges work you through a song that you can then play all the way through? If yes, is there a link or recommended version of the Tab or music posted?
Thanks for this fun adventure and help

I just noticed that this question was posted. It’s kind of in a spot where it’s less likely to get answered here in Tony’s intro to the Benchmark Forum.
I would answer YES and NO. Many weeks you will be learning techniques and chords that are in a popular song. As a new player, after a few runs through those challenges you will know enough to play through the song as you were taught the chords, the rhythm along with riffs and picking or strumming patterns. He won’t take you through the whole song in it’s entirety but he’ll do the verse, chorus and sometimes the bridge and usually give you several options of how you could play it depending on your level. Many have taken this and built it out to performing the whole song in the TAC forum.
But not every week features a song, it will vary. There are probably 2-3 songs per month.

I’m 11 weeks in to the course and I have the same question. Did you get an answer? Thanks
-
This is an old thread and I’m not sure who the question is for or even what the question is.
