The way that I count measure 5, as played by Tony in the Medium and Fast versions, are quarter note on the first beat (E note), then 8th note on the downbeat of the 2nd beat (D), then quarter note on the “and” of the 2nd beat crossing over the downbeat of the 3rd beat (G), followed by an 8th note on the “and” of the 3rd beat (A), then capped off with a quarter note downbeat on the 4th beat (G). So to recap, that’s quarter, 8th, quarter, 8th, quarter. It’s a nice mini lesson on syncopation. Try not to focus too much on the Slow version, it’s a little offbeat (literally – sorry Tony).
Trying this song out @Tony P ….I think it’s so cool, and I love red hair. How would you count that 5th measure? I get stuck on that dotted G 8th note. Thanks!
Pam,
Great question 🙂 Here is how I would count that one: 1 (& 2) & 3 (e) & 4… as I type this out I am noticing that I am a 16th note short at the end. Essentially the last note will ring through the end of the measure. The way I described it the counts in parenthesis are silent 🙂 I hope this helps and thank you for catching my goof 🙂
Cheers,
Tony
Thanks, Tony, lol. You’re just keeping us on our toes–and that’s a good thing! Thanks for getting back to me so I could stop obsessing about how to count it 🙂
