I totally get the “poser” syndrome, Terry. Have you ever heard of outsider music? Look up the Shaggs, who made a single album back in the 70s (74 I think). Listen to their music. At first it’s really easy to think “this sucks! Who would listen to this garbage?” Frank Zappa and Kurt Cobain really liked the Shaggs. They are super authentic.
What it did for me was to give me legitimacy. The Shaggs have a cult following. Some people think their music is great. I don’t know why, but after listening all the way through the album, I actually started to like them. I go back and listen to their album once in a while. I always come away inspired to write more songs and just not care who likes what I come up with.
Let me know if they help with the whole “poser” thing. Oh, and don’t just listen for 30 secs and turn them off. Do yourself a favor and find 1/2 an hour by yourself and close you eyes and listen to the whole album. It will change your view on music and musicality. It will empower you if you let it.
