Original: Bad Scotch For a Good Man
Posted by TMutter on December 17, 2022 at 7:00 pmMy Dad loved his scotch but being someone who worked his way up in the world he never saw the value of spending a lot of money on it. Even when he was given really nice single malts he would save it for his guests (me included ….). He passed in 2022 which is when I started writing original music. I wrote this song about that memory of him called “Bad Scotch For a Good Man”. Still playing around with different voicing and tempos.

What a great tribute to your Dad. And played and sang wonderfully.

I appreciate your song. My Mom passed in 2022 and I empathize with your sentiment and heartfelt original song about an intimate aspect of your Dad.

Thanks all for listening and your supportive comments.
I just realized I have a typo – my Dad passed in 2020 (not this year and cont figure out how to edit the post). What is interesting is I started writing for the first time during his Hospice care. It really has helped me process so much and I am in such a better place emotionally. Even last year I would not have been able to sing this song and get through it. Now I can write and sing a song like this from a place of gratitude vs just sadness. Music heals !

I loved the sentiment and really loved the tune… Top Banana… 😍

That was a really excellent song; both in the writing and performing. Most wonderful tribute. Well done!

Great original song @TMutter 🤩👏👏 It evoked some real emotion for me, thinking about my dad and how much I’ve missed him for the past 11 years. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to recall some memories of our relationship🙏

@Bill_Brown Thanks – The most rewarding part of this song to me is how many people have commented about how it reminds them of a parent. That is the greatest reward for me or imagine any song writer – that their work has brought about a personal memory of the listener. Thanks for taking the time to listen and provide feedback.

I have since slowed this down a bit – and actually tune my guitar before playing …..
I recorded it with two guitars, one capo at 6 and the other capo at 1 but no other instruments. Decided to keep it sparse.

Great song @TMutter ! Reminds me of my father as well & that is the real power of music. Nicely written, played, & sung!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🥃

@Christopher_H so glad you enjoyed the song and that it sparked some good memories. It is sounding even better I think now that I have a real recording which is slowed down, mic’d properly and has two guitar tracks in different registers. Looking forward to having it mixed and mastered. Thanks for listening!

@TMutter , I just love your music. I was happy to hear you talk about the FW course yesterday and the understanding that you needed a way to find a sound that is more different from your previous songs. The good news is that your current sound is so good and your lyric writing is so moving and memorable that it’s not a big deal. Just keep those amazing songs coming.
But, ultimately, it’s almost like re-writing the same song over and over with different lyrics if your guitar chops doesn’t evolve, so good on you. I really look forward to continuing to watch your progress.
I know I’m not supposed to compare myself to others, but I can’t help but say I wish I could write lyrics like you do. I’m not even kidding when I say I believe your lyrics are as good as anyone I’ve ever heard. I mean anyone. Paul Simon, John Denver, Carol King, Joni Mitchell. There are a bunch of them, so don’t let it go to your head, but yeah, I think your lyrics are as good as they get. Personal opinion. Of course, we could never believe that of our own lyrics. So you don’t have to agree with me. 😅
Anyway, I would love to hear the version with the 2 guitars. I think minimal is perfect for this song. Excellent song. Thanks for posting, Terry. You are an inspiration to me.

well Mike you are just too kind. Thank you for such supportive comments. i never know when i write a song how it lands with people so i really appreciate all the feedback from you and the TAC community. This 90 day progress party was really timely. i was having that “poser” demon creeping into my head and the progress party and all the stories along with some recent Youtuber’s taking about the poser syndrome have really lifted me up. This is really helping me to keep moving forward and do what i love – playing and writing music. thanks again for all your support.

I totally get the “poser” syndrome, Terry. Have you ever heard of outsider music? Look up the Shaggs, who made a single album back in the 70s (74 I think). Listen to their music. At first it’s really easy to think “this sucks! Who would listen to this garbage?” Frank Zappa and Kurt Cobain really liked the Shaggs. They are super authentic.
What it did for me was to give me legitimacy. The Shaggs have a cult following. Some people think their music is great. I don’t know why, but after listening all the way through the album, I actually started to like them. I go back and listen to their album once in a while. I always come away inspired to write more songs and just not care who likes what I come up with.
Let me know if they help with the whole “poser” thing. Oh, and don’t just listen for 30 secs and turn them off. Do yourself a favor and find 1/2 an hour by yourself and close you eyes and listen to the whole album. It will change your view on music and musicality. It will empower you if you let it.
