1 Year of Playing Guitar
For a couple of years prior, I kept thinking I would like to get back in to playing guitar. I hadn’t touched a guitar in years since I was probably in middle school. So on August 17, 2022 I ordered an Epiphone Starling guitar from Amazon and my new guitar journey began. A week later I joined Guitareo and started doing online lessons. In December, I started working with Nate Savage doing private lessons every couple of weeks. This past March I started doing TAC as well. When I first started last year, I read an article on GuitarWorld.com. Based on a study by Fender, 90% of new guitarists give up within the first year. I’m so happy to have made it past this first milestone and the progress I’ve managed to make over the past year. I feel like I’ve regained what skills I previously had and have taken it so far beyond that. I still have a lot to learn but I’m satisfied with what I’ve been able to accomplish and I’m enjoying the time I spend doing it.

@Greg_Weber Congratulatioms on your 1 year of playing guitar milestone! It is true with just about any new hobby or skill, but especially guitar that we see so many drop off within the first year. The first year is always the toughest, i it ijs when we’re just being introduced to the guitar and feeling on top of the world, and then when we realize it isn’t as easy as we thought, and it was going to take a lot of practice (especially scales, learning to use a pick or finger style, different skills and patterns, etc. that the initial excitement turns into fear or not wanting to practice and put in the work to learn guitar and get better.

@Loraine, a lot of truth in what you said. I started playing when I was about 8 or 9 as we had a really good music teacher who offered guitar classes when I was in elementary school. After I got to middle school, I kind of dropped the guitar. I feel like we’re so fortunate now. With the internet there are so many good and affordable resources to use to learn guitar.

Hi @Greg_Weber , congrats with going a year so far and not putting down your guitar🎸 I think that’s awesome, and something to be proud of. In your mind, what has been the biggest contributing factor in keeping you motivated to this point? Just curious what your thoughts are on that. Anyways, I’m happy for you and your accomplishment, and I hope you have many more years without putting your guitar down!

@Bill_Brown, I think the thing that keeps me most motivated is that I’ve gained some pretty solid skills on Guitareo, here on TAC, and through some private lessons I’ve been doing with Nate Savage online. I think we’re fortunate as there are so many great resources to learn from online and most don’t cost an extraordinary amount of money to do so they’ve very accessible.
I’m now able to take the skills I’ve developed in the past year and apply them to songs I love. I always liked the music of Elvis Presley especially and now I’m capable of playing a number of those songs as well as many others.
Am I the guitarist I want to be? No, not yet. But I’ve come so much further in one year than I ever accomplished in years of playing as a kid. Thanks for asking Bill. 🙂
