  • 900 Miles learned traditionally

Posted by Alfred on June 2, 2021 at 11:37 am

There is a youtuber, Blaine Chappell, who plays traditional banjo, who I asked how he sources his songs. His answer was that he basically does it directly from others, rather than some compendium somewhere. I decided to give it a go, and I pieced together this song using that method as much as possible. My chord progression isn’t exactly like anyone else’s, but it remains simple and the song is recognizable as the traditional tune it is. The crowning jewel IMHO is the final verse that I got from my Dad on Monday! Hope you enjoy, this was a fun way to learn a song. I tried out an incomplete version of the song this weekend… so @AttyTJ here is the complete song!

(I usually increase the tempo on each verse and slow down on the last, but I didn’t do that in this recording… I will save that for playing it live I guess)https://youtu.be/_VyhCHYW7IU

Your finger picking is excellent with the alternating bass notes. As usual; very good! Nice choice, and interesting way you explained you put it together.

That was cool! I detect a certain theme in your songs 🤣

PS I’m making some progress on the 500 miles song, thanks again for sharing! I’m having so much fun with it.

Thanks @Alisa I grew up listening to my Dad and Uncle play traditional songs, and songs from the 50’s and 60’s . My Dad also played classical. When I started TAC in February some of the bass runs were beyond me. While they haven’t been lessons on the site per-se I have used the TAC method to learn the style of guitar. I will be using the same method going forward for other learning projects as well.

It may be that I am subconsciously developing a style of my own, which is cool in itself

Well played, @Alfred , I will bet your dad is vey happy with that rendition. I haven’t reached finger picking this one yet, so even more impressive how well you have it down.

I just thought you would get a chuckle out of my Dad’s last verse. I thought it was funny.
I liked your strumming version too. It is legit! that’s the fun of folk music. there is no “right” way to do it.

The singing reminds me of Hank3’s voice.

Well now, that is totally cool Alfred! The song, the approach to learning from someone else’s playing and your Dad working with you on the closing verse. Well done young man👍

ConTACulations (again) @Alfred for your traditional learning, excellent play, and catching Tony P’s eye for the “Hollar.” Lots of great wins in there, my friend.

And another great thing about folk music, as demonstrated by all those who are the icons of the genre, songs can be expanded to tell the point of the moment for the artiist.

    Thank you @BobGarrity1 and @AttyTJ

I didn’t read the mid-week email until I got home this morning… I was wondering why this song bubbled back up…

TJ, specifically, you and Doc are big reasons that folk has become one of my areas of interest again. You guys seem to dig old great old songs up often and always have a story behind them, and share them on the VOMs
