  • A Total Beginner With A Sore Elbow

Posted by Felicia S on November 1, 2021 at 12:21 pm

I’ve been doing the 30 Days To Play section for about two weeks now. My elbow on my strumming arm (right arm) is feeling weird and sore. When I play, I don’t notice it, but later I do. Any suggestions?

Hi Felicia – Welcome to TAC! I’m sorry you’re experiencing soreness in your arm and elbow. What size guitar do you have? If it is too large, that could be part of the problem, and you might consider a smaller guitar. Secondly, how you hold the guitar and rest your right arm might need adjusting. Your right arm should hug and fit comfortably against the body of the guitar. Also, if you are too tight in your stance, that could cause problems. Relax and try and play from your wrist and not your elbow and arm. If the problem continues, stop playing for a bit and rest your arm. You don’t want the issue becoming a larger one, such as tendinitis or tennis elbow. See a doctor if it persists.

In the skills courses Tony does one called Guitar Stretches. Worth taking a look at that to relieve tension in your arms.
