  • Cover of Pekelo’s “My Island Maui”

Posted by AttyTJ on April 22, 2021 at 4:17 pm

At the Scones and Jammin’ VOM on the 15th, I changed my approach, and did a ballad from a different land.

In our world when we tune guitars this way, we call it “Open G,” but the players in Slack Key call it Taro Patch. Slack Key is also finger style, and for me, not yet.

The song is a recall of a man who grew up in Hana on the east side of Maui, and became known as one of the masters of and promotors of Slack Key.

    I hope you enjoy.

(The guitar is built from Koa [back and sides] on Maui, some of which came from the property where we used to frequently visit, and where, we met PeKelo when I wasn’t playing again, yet, but now wish I had been.)

A, E, D, @Alfred . I might have tried it on Ukulele, but when my son and daughter-in-law moved out, they took it with them (it was built by the same luthier as the guitar).

      Looking forward to hearing it.

Aw sad days… At least they have music in their lives! You need a Uke @AttyTJ shoot in my humble opinion (and George Harrison’s, and Eddie Vedder’s) all guitarists need a uke in their life!

Beautiful tribute to Maui. I’ve never been here but will someday. Been to Kauai a couple times. You definitely had the Hawaian vibe. Nice Guitar too. I have a Koa guitar as well and love it. Really nice job playing and singing.
