Tony’s Acoustic Challenge – The New Way to Learn Guitar Family Forums Small Wins Great Practice with Friday challenge in Key of G Barre

  • Great Practice with Friday challenge in Key of G Barre

This weeks challenge of “KC12 Major (key of G) Barre” was a perfect challenge to use the techniques from Fretboard Wizard CAGED navigation section. Played the Chord in the E shape and A shape then played the scale Pattern to further reinforce it in my head.

Good work @Cadgirl 👏👏 Now to make it more interesting, using the same chord shapes, find the 1-4-5 chords in the key of A, then C, and then D – you can keep going if you like, but the point is to notice the patterns between the chords relative to their location along the neck. Have fun🤩🎸🤘

hint: if you make the 1 chord an E shaped barre, the 4 & 5 chords are going to be A shaped, so if you make the 1 chord from an A shape, what shape will the 4 & 5 chords be?🤣

Sounds like a good practice session. I’ll print out your comment and work on it. 🙂
      Thanks @Bill_Brown

@Bill_Brown , I know the day will come where i’ll have a light bulb moment and this will be easy. I think i’m getting there, but right now it’s not easy (ha ha ha). I have been reading and re-reading to try to get to what I should be doing, but more of why it works the way it does? This is what I have come up with.

If I was working in the Key of C, my 1 4 5 would be C F G. If I used an A barre for the C chord, then my F and G chord would be using the D shape. I played it as such and it sounded nice (1 4 5 1). I am thinking that since the chords shapes were close, working down the neck and back up the neck, using some of the same notes is why the harmony sounded good together. Am i even close!! 😨

Good morning @Cadgirl , my original intention was for you to see a pattern with 1-4-5 chords along the neck using the E and A shaped barre chords ONLY. Why just those 2 shapes only? Because these 2 shapes (and their families – major, minor, 7, sus forms) are the most commonly played barre chords.

The pattern I was trying to have you see is:

*Using an E shaped barre for the 1 chord, the 4 chord will be an A shape barred at the same fret (as the 1 chord) and the 5 chord will be an A shape barred 2 frets higher (toward the body of the guitar).

*Using an A shape as the 1 chord, the 5 chord will be an E shape barred at the same fret (as the 1 chord) and the 4 chord will be an E shape barred 2 frets lower (toward the headstock).

The fact that you thought to use the D and C shapes for finding the 4 & 5 chords for the keys I originally mentioned, I think is amazingly awesome and by far, above the call to duty. But did you see a pattern along the fretboard doing that? If so, or if not, through your effort, you’ve gained a huge amount of knowledge and a much broader view of using the different CAGED chord shapes than I ever have. Great work Cadgirl👏👏👏

If you want, go ahead and test the patterns I’ve discussed above and see if it seems a little more simple.😘

@Bill_Brown , thank you so much for all your help and patience. My gosh. Yes, I am going to go over everything you said. It helps me to sit down and chart everything out. Also it seems like one chord just flows into the next. But, I have to keep working on it so its second nature with me. Again, thanks for all the help.

Just checking in @Cadgirl , did you have a chance to try out the “patterns” I talked about?

I just finished up doing the CAGED section (again) in FBW today. I thought it would help give me a better understanding of it.

@Bill_Brown I’m sitting here with colored pencils drawing in notes, scales and patterns in different colors for different chords…. and I think I got it.

I’m using The Key of C. My 1 4 5 are C F G notes. using the A shaped chord barre for the 1 chord, and the 4th chord (F root) and 5th chord (G root) will be E shaped chord.

The A shape and E shape share the same pattern. the C & F root notes are on the 8th fret. Just the E pattern starts on the Low E string and the A pattern starts on the A string. Also on the 8 fret it contains all my notes needed for the Key of C (C F G). Same with the 10 th fret (where my root for G is), my C F and G notes are there. I think this is getting a little easier for me.

This is something I will have to keep doing to really get it to stick. It really confusing but not as confusing as it was just last week. I can see something now. Maybe I don’t have it all memorized but I can see a pattern in how it works.

@Kitman and @Bill_Brown , this is a great test. I really think i’m beginning to understand this. The more I use it the more sense it will make sense to me.

@Bill_Brown I’m answering before I look at the other comments. So I could be dead wrong.

If I was going to find the CAGED barre chords for 1-4-5 chords in the Key of A, I could use any arraignment of chords I liked, is that correct? So with the Key of A, the 1-4-5 is A D E,

I would use the E shape, root is A for the chord of A. I would use the A shape root of D for the chord of D and I would use A shape root of E, for E. Does that sound correct? ok, now i’ll look at the comments.

I still have to do the C and D.

So far so good @Cadgirl , everything you’ve said is correct for the key of A using just the E shaped & A shaped barre chords! Great work, but I also want you to see the pattern on the fretboard with using those 2 barre chord shapes. (take a look at the “hint” I gave you.)

P.S. Doing the scales is extra credit! (lol)😂

This is harder than I thought. I made a chart of where all the barre chords are. I’m just picking up my guitar and will put the last 2 barre chords together with the patterns!!

OK @Bill_Brown , I think I got it. Key of C, 1-4-5 would be C F G. Using CAGED system C would use the A shape chord, root being C (root on A string, 3rd fret). F would use the D shape chord, root being on the D string 3 fret, G would also use the D shape chord, root being on the D string 5th fret.

Last was Key of D, 1-4-5 would be D G A. Using CAGED system D would use the C shaped chord, root being on the A string 5th fret. G would use the E shaped chord, root being on the low E string, 3th fret. A would also use the E shaped chord, root being on the 7th fret.

I know, i know… the extra credit. I’m so freaking happy with everything I have right now. I honestly think i’m getting this.

@Moonhare , Thanks for noticing all the time and effort @Bill_Brown has put into helping me. I understand what is going on within the CAGED system better now. I look at the daily challenges a little different now too. HOOT HOOT.
