Sorry if this sounds– well– dumb. But any help or experienced advice really appreciated.

There are plenty of web pages out there that show me how to clean my guitar, but I gotta think the best advice might come from ACTUAL guitar-owners and players.

I typed “cleaning guitar” here in our Forum and got nothing, and checked out a few websites, and while the info was OK, the guitar-cleaning instructions were kind-of, “clean it”. Duh. More generalities than specifics of what to do and what NOT to do.

Mine’s a year old, and I think it’s lookin’ pretty bad indeed! I keep really good care of it as far as keeping my hands clean- (it’s not like it’s got food all over it). But it gets PLAYED everyday for an hour or more- so that’s gonna show.

You all know what it looks like and what it really is- so let’s just call it “dust”👍.

Without getting too carried away, is there a really good site with actual, real, information on this? Better yet- anybody out there in our TAC family that can share how YOU clean your guitar(s). They all need it from time to time- it’d be a big help.

Oops- forgot- should I take all the strings OFF to clean it?, clean it when I change strings?, leave ’em on and just clean around & under ’em? Help!

    Thanks– Mark J

Update– upon further searching I ran across an “Acoustic Life” video made by Tony that goes into great detail. It’s called “3 Surprising Ways to Clean Your Acoustic Guitar”. Good stuff, there.

Hi Mark Glad you found something on it. I typically wipe down my guitar after every use, and then it gets a thorough cleaning when I change strings.

Hi @mkjohnsons , I do the same as Loraine. Wipe down (especially strings) after playing and thorough cleaning when I change strings. My luthier showed me all I ever need are soft cloths one barely damp emphasis on barely and one to wipe any residual. I do one fret at a time and keep at it until both cloths no longer pick up dirt. Same deal on the body. No wax no oils no polishes for me. My oldest guitar turned 100 last year and all is well.

Not a stupid question, not at all. I was wondering the same thing.
