  • Guitar musical notation

    In music notation, I get confused whether one is supposed to slide between frets or hammer on; if there’s an arrow between 2 notes, are you supposed to pluck or strum. If there are ‘x’s alongside a chord, does it always mean to mute the chord or strings? Is there a location where guitar musical notation for guitar playing is documented or can someone enlighten me. If I could find Tony’s explanation for every exercise I’ve printed off, I might be able to find out, but otherwise, it’s a guess at best.

    Hi Zephyrpn,

    I’m not sure if there’s an explanation somewhere, but here’s how I read them:

    x = mute

    arrows only=hammer ons/pull offs

    arrows and / = slides

    arrows that go up the page are bends.

    the bugs bunny one from this week shows all of them except the mutes.

    hope this helps.

    You can Google guitar music notation and get many sites that explain it. Here is one that I’ve used in the past..

      Thanks Loraine and Whilbs – I’m glad the TAC community works whereas the website is a small shell of what it used to be. Loraine > this responding to questions is really keeping you busy – thanks for your support.

    Hi Whilbs

    That does help – I notice on bugs bunny, the arrow going up has 1/4 at the top – does that mean bend for 1/4 beat or something like that.

    Still confused. If I do the google search, there are no hits on words like ‘strum’ vs ‘pluck’, no hits that I’ve found for ‘hammer’ or ‘slide’ or ‘bend’. I’m sure I’m missing something but I haven’t located the answers yet. I’ve got many years of piano playing behind me so reading music is not the problem – only the guitar-specific notation.

    You might try googling “understanding tabulature” and “understanding chord diagrams.”
