Guitarsenals
Posted by GerryB56 on August 12, 2022 at 7:18 amJust want to throw something out there to see what you fellow geeks think. This is definitely meant to be a little bit facetious, but it is a serious topic for guitar lovers.
I had never heard the term “guitarsenal” before joining TAC, but now am fascinated by seeing the collections of fellow members. My mini dilemma, sort of, is that I feel a bit hesitant to acquire more guitars before my playing skills are sufficiently developed to make good use of them.
On the other hand, lots of people collect far more trivial stuff than this, right?! Even when they’re not being played, guitars look amazing just hanging on the wall! I have 3 at the moment (Seagull Concert Hall Mahogany, Epiphone Les Paul Special Cherry Burst, and a Taylor GS Mini spruce / Australian blackwood) but the itch is there to add to the collection. Kind of want a resonator, for one thing.
So what do you folks think? Should I “give myself permission” to buy that next guitar even though I’m a long ways from being a real player? I mean, I can afford it, and I’m not talking vintage or collector’s item prices here. There are plenty of interesting looking guitars for sale on the local Facebook Marketplace board, for instance.
Let’s have some fun with this!

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Knew I could count on your support, Mrfredsporty😄 That resonator is looking better and better every day!

Well, Gerry, Fred @Mrfredsporty already gave you the simple answer: “YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”, but it bears repeating: “YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”. 🤗
First, a resonator gives you a completely different sound and many times people use a different technique, slide. So, it doesn’t matter that you are not a “real guitar player”. 🤔
Second, you are a real guitar player. You just haven’t been able to accept that, but you own 3 guitars and you play guitar on a regular basis. You are just as much a guitar player as Eric Clapton because “real guitar player” is NOT defined by ability or length of time or experience. It is simply a person who plays guitar. 😎
Third, getting multiple guitars is part of the guitar journey. There are a lot of differences between guitars, and at first they seem pretty small and subtle. You need to explore those differences until they are huge and glaring and you know exactly what you like in a guitar. 😆
Fourth, you are a member of Tony’s Acoustic Challenge and you have be “ordered” by Tony himself to “go forth and explore”. AND have fun doing it. 😉

Hmm, Mike, I do like your rationale on those points😄 Especially the one about needing to explore different sounds, etc. Makes perfect sense! And, yes, I must stop hesitating to label myself a guitar player, because I’ll probably never be as good as I really want to be.
Of course, I also wouldn’t want to defy Tony’s urging to build my guitarsenal!

Well @Gerry856 If she feels good in your arms, then buy it! Just don’t buy a guitar, let it buy you. Just my 2 cents. 😊🧙♂️😎
-
Thanks, Marty69! I sure won’t argue with you there. I’ll just keep working towards the day when they sound good to my ears when I play them!

Well you got me at “real player”: still trying to figure that one out. While I was scratching my chin whiskers in deep contemplation I stumbled upon this beaut. There is one in red but I like this pickup better. Real player or fake player (still don’t know) if I had the cheddar this would be in my guitarsenal pronto.😄
-
Wow, that’s a pretty sweet looking instrument, for sure! Love the hubcap😄 Yeah, I know, I need to get over this “real player” hangup of mine – although I’m pretty sure it’s a common affliction with us guitar geeks. Lucky for me, my dear spouse is never going to tell me I have enough guitars already – her thing is horses, and they are just a tad more $$$😆
-
Wow, lucky you, @GerryB56 , that you get to compare your budget to the price of a horse. You should jump on this Pogreba as it’s under $5000 for an instrument that is totally unique and has amazing tone and amazing playability. This is the first really expensive guitar I would buy if I could. And it’s not really a very expensive guitar like $15,000 and up. But with the number of quality guitars at lower price points, I just don’t see why I would spend thousands of dollars even if I had it. But the Pogreba is so unique, beautiful, and functional that the reason to buy it is just obvious. It’s one of a kind. Even his other resonators don’t sound like or look like each other. And a completely hand built guitar for under $5000? That’s just unheard of.
I don’t know if I want to thank you for posting this or not @jumpinjeff . It’s been a long time since I had bad GAS, and never for a guitar this expensive. The most expensive guitar I’ve ever craved is around $3000. Over that and I just think it gets ridiculous. All I can say is WOW! Well, that and I’ve never in my whole life been in a position to spend that kind of money on a guitar. So, I’m safe.

@MikeGaurnier , I have been a fan of Progreba for a while. I tend to seek a more guitar sounding resonator sound and this for sure fits the bill. Sorry but not sorry about the GAS. You were going to find it eventually. I figure it was only a matter of time 😅

The only difference here is that I usually don’t care that I will never be able to afford the guitar. But this one is different. If there was any way in the world I could pull this off, I’d be working on buying that guitar. That’s not just the super coolest resonator I’ve ever seen, that’s pretty close to the super, super coolest guitar of any type I’ve ever seen. I mean, wowzer, zounds, and any other stupid sounding words that express amazement that exist! 😏

@GerryB56 , Yes, oh course you need more guitars. A resonator or a slide guitar might be a nice addition to your family of guitars. You can always trade up from what you have too. I use guitar-center site to get an idea of what is out there (also they have a 45 day guarantee). So you could buy and try out and return. 🙂

Funny, no one here at TAC has told me NOT to buy more guitars😆 Good thing, too, Tony might revoke their membership! I’m in Canada, we don’t have Guitar Center, but there is a large chain store Long & McQuade near me, and they have a rental program so I might be able to try that route. But I’m pretty sure I’ll be adding a resonator to my guitarsenal soon🙂

@jumpinjeff , I had no current desire for a resonator… until I watched the video in your post. That thing just oozes cool, vibe and mojo. Yes, I want it!!!!
@GerryB56 , you love guitar, you love music – ’nuff said. If you have the means and the desire – and your brain can reconcile it in some way – yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Saw your impressive guitarsenal featured on Tony’s show recently, Kitman – wow, I have some way to go! Not that it’s a competition, of course. That hubcap resonator is sure one cool looking instrument- mighty sweet sounding, too. But I’m not quite ready to invest thousands in a single guitar yet! Someday, though, it would be awesome to commission a custom guitar from one of the many talented luthiers I keep discovering on YouTube and elsewhere.
