  • Holding the Pick

Posted by dianebellardmac-com on February 4, 2023 at 3:47 pm

Hey everyone. I just started and am doing the 30 Days to Play. I’m struggling on what to do with the rest of my hand while holding the pick. I tend to rest my fingers on the pick guard but find my wrist gets sore. Suggestions?

You might want to check out the Flat Picking Jumpstart in the skills courses.

Tony P does a great job of explaining how to hold the flat pick and how to use it in the Flat pick jumpstart course located in the skills section.

Also my personal experience is I held my pick way too firmly. All my motion was too big. Initially I was unaware of how to balance the pick, instead making up for the lack of balance with the death grip. Less Tension, more relaxation, less movement, more sound

I have a love hate relationship with the pick, and it rotating in my hand, holding it correctly, having a death grip, holding too lightly and losing it. Definitely check out the Jumpstart to Flatpicking. As for the other fingers, some people leave them loose to simply hang downwards, and others tuck the fingers in like a fist. Strumming is supposed to be from the wrist. If you rest your fingers on the pick guard then you’re playing through you hand/finger, instead of through your wrist.
