  • How jumpinjeff Used to TAC

Posted by dr_dave on April 12, 2021 at 9:53 am

I realize that there’s a lot of current activity in this forum stimulated by the prospect of winning some neat prizes, but I thin it’s the best place to share an older TAC story with some members who probably have never seen this. There is a ton of wisdom in this old post that may be lost, since it likely will only be accessible for a few more months. Even members who have seen this will probably want to re-visit this thread one more time. Enjoy!

@dr_dave, Whoa,….been a while since I have seen that. Hard to believe that was 3.5 years ago. The only thing really different is I have found something that lives beyond fun. At the time I was at the beginning of expressing myself tone-versationally but totally jazzed by the notion it could be done. Now my tonic vocabulary has reached a place where I can express some more detailed nuance and connect that to meaning. Each time I have a new “small win” I feel even more curious about what lies ahead which provides me the fuel I need to explore an exercise for 20 hours or so. In that practice I get to the place of what lies ahead and it begins again. Beyond the fun is a deep and profound satisfaction. I get to go now where I want to go on my journey, the doubt has been removed. The satisfaction is not necessarily the result (that would be the small win) but rather knowing without a shadow of doubt, the path I am on is leading me to my desire. I just have to keep on walking (pushing that boulder uphill).

@jumpinjeff , I have to say that your last 3.5 years of development notwithstanding, your words and thoughts in this video and throughout the entire thread were perfectly nuanced. You made a solid connection with so many TAC members. I was a relative newbie to TAC at the time, and I have to say that the way we interacted as a consequence of posts that shared some of these ideas over the following few months really set me up for meeting you at ALF 2018. What a connection! And to be selected for the same ALF band – the Blue Hydra Honeyclusters. What a long, strange trip it’s been – and yet there are many miles ahead.

Funny to reminisce about how this was just a few days before my first visit to Casa Tiano, meeting @MommaTAC and Dom (whose current @ name I can’t seem to locate right now) and so many others (Adam Price, Doctor How, Carol 3M Stillhand, @Maggie , Dmart, Eryn Michel, Susan Achincloss and so many more I can’t even name them all!). My mind was exploded that week and I have not been able to piece it back together. All for the better, I might add. It was certainly a catalyst for growth.

Probably the advice that has helped me the most in my guitar journey came from @jumpinjeff, and that is to reduce tension. I have been working on a certain guitar piece for months now and at one point in the piece I have to play 8 notes in rapid succession (all triplets and eighth notes). If my mindset is to try really hard to get it right, I flub it almost every time. If my mindset is to relax, I play it correctly at least twice as often.

p.s. I need a Hot Tuna cap like that one.

@Maydog said: “and that is to reduce tension.”

So easy to say but it takes a lifetime to do. Seems like everytime I get something under tension management I do something to make it a little more complex and then back to the whole reduction of tension practice. It is magic when you get to that place where you mind and fingers are free.

I could watch Jorma play for a month solid.

👍 to Jorma. This is a really amazing acoustic bluesgrass [sic] album of his that I love:

Besides/and including Jorma there is a who’s who of music OSMness on that album. Sam Bush in particular slays it for me.

OMG this was so helpful. I’m so glad to have heard this interview and realize that it’s a process and we all go through it. Play for fun and in the moment. Enjoy each strum, each note picked…

This is one of many treasures in the old forum that I’m going to miss terribly. Does anybody know an easy way to download and archive a YouTube video so I can save it before TAC decides to take it away forever?

@dr_dave , it is in my youtube history but I am not the creator of the video so it will stay in “my” youtube history file as long as I don’t delete it but if Tony decides he wants to remove it, he does controls that. I don’t see any reason why he would want to remove it so I think we are good for the foreseeable future.

Thank you so much for posting this. Jumpin’ Jeff nailed the core of why I’m here and couldn’t really put into words. Finding, creating and giving joy in the present are the only good reasons to pursue something this challenging. Jeff’s comments are a tremendous refresher for me Thanks again.
