Tony’s Acoustic Challenge – The New Way to Learn Guitar Family Forums Community Support how to use the licks to play along with songs and “jam”

  • how to use the licks to play along with songs and “jam”

    Posted by docteny on January 20, 2022 at 1:21 am

    I am enjoying all the licks and chord progressions and fingering practice but would like to know how to apply this when playing a song ie a blues tune or how they fit into a jamming session. Perhaps other TAC members can suggest some songs or help me to figure out how to apply the licks when playing the actual song. I don’t have any one to jam with or access to “open Mic” sessions. I would appreciate some direction so I can use all these licks and progressions to play songs. I also find it difficult to remember licks from week to week as there are so many. Hoping for some advice to get me going

    Did you see the Acoustic Tuesday Show for this week? Tony showed a great example of how to integrate the Tuesday Lick into a basic strum progression. Acoustic Tuesday is the fourth Icon choice in the left Margin Bar. I like the example because he does it at a reasonable speed, (I still have to slow it down to play along). It gives me the sense of how it works.

    You can also check out a zoom virtual open mic session. These sprang up in the TAC Community in response and still continue. You can find links to enjoy in the forum and they are welcoming if you wish to plat, watch or just ask a question. They are most weekends.

      Hi Albert

      I did sign up for geeks and will try and find some open sessions, but you did mention that TAC has some sessions on the weekends. I am still not sure how to find them or see what times they are on. Can you help me with this. Also, do you have any favourite songs that you can use some of Tony’s licks on

      Cheers, Docteny

    Just Music Geeks is open to anyone interested in the virtual open mics (VOMs). It’s a great community forum, and there are VOMs and other learning experiences. Hope to see you there @docteny !

      Hello @docteny ;

      For me, I still haven’t been able to incorporate licks into my playing after 2 1/2 years, but that’s simply because that’s not my focus. Someday it will happen because I have gained the skills from TAC and I become fluent enough with my fingers to simply do it. So, for me, I just do the lessons knowing that the connection between them and my songs is they continue to improve my general guitar skills. But I know others have made it part of their focused practice to include these licks into their playing.

      As far as the VOMs go, simply go to justmusicgeeks.com as @Loraine has said and sign up; it’s free. There you will find the information regarding the VOMs. You will get the times and the links to join. In brief, the happen Sunday afternoon, Wednesday afternoon, Thursday afternoon every other week, Friday evening and Saturday evening. There are also early morning sessions Monday though Friday. All the information is at justmusicgeeks.com.

      I hope this helps.

      MG 😀

    thanks Mike

    I will try justmusicgeeks.com

    I wonder if it would be possible for Tony to suggest songs that specific licks could be used in and that might make it easier to incorporate the lick into the song

    I do agree that after 10 months on TAC, my skills have improved and I find it challenging to play the licks etc but am playing regularly and not missing any of the 5 daily challenges
