  • HUGE WIN! Free recording program for Windows

Posted by Cadgirl on June 9, 2022 at 9:55 am

For those of you that want to play around with combining your backing track with the Tuesday lick, but are put off on having to purchase the software. There is the recording software for Windows called Audacity (FREE). I just downloaded it and it looks like it will be entertaining to work with. Since I record from my IPhone and I’m going to assume a lot of you do too. You’ll also need a converter to change your MOV to a WAV. There is a free converter at http://www.sabsoft.com.

I have been wanting to be able to record a backing track and then a solo track. Combining the Tuesday lick with the Wednesday backing track. I’m totally geeked about it right now. I’m have been straying away from my TAC family and looking for something to get me back on track. I think this just might be the ticket.

There is also Guitar Band, which is totally awesome, but it’s only for Apple

I hope this is useful information for someone.

@Kitman , i have been looking at audio editor and recording application at the local music store and even with the cheapest it’s over $100. When I was recommended this from another guitar site as a free download. I couldn’t turn it down. I thought maybe others could use it too.

Hey, @MikeGaurnier I downloaded the free audacity software and it’s awesome! You might need to use the converter software to change you song to a .wav file. But, it’s worth it. I’m trying to play ‘dust in the wind’ I have the sheet music. So now I can follow along but with the speed of the song slowed down a little. I haven’t done much with it yet. But, just being able to play along to songs with a slightly slower speed is helpful to me. Just wanted to let you know.

You have risen to the next level, grasshopper. 🤣

Hey Denise ( @Cadgirl ), this is so awesome. In the old days (before computers, etc 😅 ), there wasn’t much a person could do with their guitar journey if they didn’t get into a band and/or start playing small gigs at clubs. So many of us on TAC start playing 20 – 50 years ago. And there are all sorts of stories about how that went. But now?

Well, one way to make our guitar journey more exciting is what you have gotten into. You can actually do this with a simple home computer and free software. Many of the TACers use Audacity. When I was very new to TAC I asked how others were recording and making the amazing videos I was seeing pop up on the forum and found out about Audacity. I tried it, but I settled on Ableton Live. Ableton Live Lite is also free. I haven’t used my DAW much because I got into the VOMs. And I use Musescore to draw up my sheet music, and it is also a free, open source program. Then there is Shotcut, another free, open source application that I use as my video editor (even though I had already bought one, I like this one better). And then of course, there is Open Office, you guessed it, free, open source office suite. I am a big fan of the free, open source software. It’s a bit of a story why Audacity didn’t work for me. But I realize now it wasn’t actually Audacity that caused me problems, but the audio interface I was using.

Anyway, back to your new discovery, Audacity. I am really happy for you. This is a whole nother rabbit hole and you can find hours and hours of fun inside this rabbit hole. And it can keep you entertained for years. Forever, really. And here’s the biggest kicker, it will make you a much better guitarist. Turns out, laying down tracks takes the same skill as playing in a band. You have to adjust your timing to an outside source. Nice. I have heard it said that getting a DAW was the break through that propelled a certain YouTuber, professional guitarist up to professional level. So, congratulations.

@MikeGaurnier , You are so right, I have risen up. I swear, this software is going to make me so much better. I can clearly see my mistakes. I’m not doing a lot with it right now with the software, just uploading a song and playing along. It was so fast to see, I wasn’t playing something correctly. If the song is too fast I can slow it down, that is a big help. Just practicing every day isn’t enough, you have to make sure you playing it correctly. YES!!! This is going to be so much fun.

That’s so great, Denise @Cadgirl . I think you might make faster progress, but you have to have fun, number one. Don’t let technology bog you down.

@MikeGaurnier , here something I did today. I downloaded a karaoke app. Maybe I can learn how to sing without setting off all the dogs in the neighborhood to howling. ha ha ha

        Hey Denise @Cadgirl ,

When I started singing, it was with a group of friends at karaoke. I was one of those who was so terribly off key, that the audience was embarrassed for me. I wish I were kidding, but I’m not. Other people started giving me really simple tips. Over the years I got better, but one thing I noticed. All those really simple tips are available on YouTube. I wouldn’t pay to learn how to sing. It’s like exercising. If you find a YouTube video instructor that you like, you can be taught what “exercises” to do in a 10 minute video. If you do the exercises, your voice will get better.

However you choose to approach it, good for you. I started playing guitar to support my singing. I think everyone who learns to sing will love it. I hope to “meet” you one day on a VOM. 😊

@MikeGaurier , i did find a free app for voice. But, since you mentioned it, i’ll look around the internet for some exercises too. I’ll get there to a VOM one day. you’ll see. 🙂
