Hypermobile aka “Double Jointed” advise?
Hi all, I’ve got a bit of an odd question – does anyone have tips for folks who are hypermobile aka double jointed? (it is when your second knuckle goes beyond neutral and looks like it dips downwards when your finger is fully extended).
So far, I’ve only had issues twice while learning the guitar. Once, while trying the John Prine C/G Chord my ring finger couldn’t reach the shape without the joint going beyond neutral. The second, today while trying to do the A Shape Barre chord exercise (ring finger attempting to hold down the DGB strings and my knuckle when beyond neutral).
In order to keep my finger from bending beyond neutral I have to keep my knuckle from full extension but when I do that I can’t make the chord.
I have a feeling it is all strength building and limiting the extension of my finger, but I wanted to see if anyone had double jointed tips. I’m only hypermobile in the second joint of my middle and ring fingers – I know some folks have issues in all 10 digits.
Cheers.
