Is there a way to send PMs?
Posted by dr_dave on April 18, 2021 at 2:15 pmI am pretty sure I have had some PMs with a few people, but I can’t find my way to them. Worse yet, I believe I was at a page today where I could compose a message, in theory at least, but there was no way I could pull in an address for the person I meant to message. And now I can’t even find my way back to that place. This site certainly has become more difficult for me to use.

I see a way if I can access the member’s profile page, but in the particular case I am trying to send a message to someone whose profike page I don’t know how to reach. I can’t currently locate any posts by the member I am trying to contact.

Well, I struggled my way back to the “compose new message screen” by clicking “Message” on the profine page of another member to whom I did not want to send a message. From there, I was able to navigate to a list of prior PM conversations I’ve had, but I still have not figured out a way to send a message to an individual whose profile I have no way to access. This site is really not intuitive to me. Was it a desired outcome of the recent re-design to curtail use of the PM feature?

Well you found the message page, but there is no way to message someone if you don’t know therir website name.

Perhaps there’s no way even if you do. I don’t know how to search for a person’s profile page, and the new message form does not seem to work.

@dr_dave , did you try clicking on your name in the top header, next to your round profile pic icon? When I do that a drop down box is revealed, the sixth choice on the list is the “Member Search” and the Third choice down is “My Messages” I have been able to successfully look up quite a few folks there on account of the change in nickname structure. It is slow so patients is helpful but for me it is slow in !0s of seconds not minutes wize.

Thanks, Jeff. I was remiss in not replying a couple days ago. I had success using your directions.

<div>@dr_dave, after the initial roll-out of the new site, @Levi explained that in an effort to speed up the site, the “Messaging” envelope that used to be next to the Notification Bell was moved into the Profile. If you click on the carat next to your Avatar, “My Messages” is now one of the options, and two moves within it “New Messages” and “Messages.” The Compose feature is part of both of those sub-pages.</div>
That is also where you pick up incoming, although they should also be flagged and counted at the Notification Bell.

Thanks @AttyTJ . I had success using similar directions (actually a few days ago – this is very close to what jumpin’ jeff recommended), but I especially appreciate the added information about the site tweaking. Wow, I didn’t need a user manual for the old site but I do find I need one for the new, “simplified” site.
I foreshadowed this a bit during a mentor “Town Hall” last Fall, during which many of us first learned that a “new TAC site” was under development. I suffer from something I call “memory permanence.” Once I become very familiar with how a program works, my mouse goes on “autopilot” and I do most things without really having to think about it. But software developers are constantly working to put me at a disadvantage by changing the way sites look and feel, hiding controls in menus where I’d never think of looking. The result is that I’m constantly struggling, and too often unsuccessfully, to learn how to do things that I used to know how to do yesterday without even thinking about it. I think this should be added as a modern definition of “progress.” Forgive me for being honest.

I just had a really deep sense of deja vu, having no way to find PMs. Then it occurred to me I was on my iPhone. I switched to my iPad and found I again had the ability to navigate to PMs. So it seems like iPhone is pretty much an un-supported device. Maybe I’m in the minority, but I rarely use a laptop for connecting to TAC. I am assuming that TAC is optimized for a laptop environment.
