Ken O. – How I TAC – 09/12/2021
Hi all. I’m Ken and I’m a recently retired fire battalion chief from SW Florida. I originally started guitar with the Keith Urban package from HSN a few years ago. The content was so-so as was the guitar. I worked at it for a while before moving around with little direction taking tips from Justin Guitar, Eric Andreas and other Youtubers before setting it down for a couple of years and finding Tony’s webinar last week. When I committed to TAC, I traded up my guitar as well to a Taylor Big Baby. What a difference a decent instrument makes!
1.) How many days per week do you play?
I’ve committed to 5 days per week min. 10 min which usually turns into 20-30 and anything extra on the weekends is a bonus.
2.) What time of day do you play?
Since I’ve only been at it about a week, I’m playing first thing in the morning after I get up and again at night before bed.
3.) Where do you play?
I play in one of two places. In the AM, it’s out on my patio and at night in our spare bedroom. Both places isolate my wife from the random sounds coming from my guitar which can be a little annoying coming from someone just starting out. As the Florida weather starts to cool down, I’ll likely be doing both sessions on the patio, but right now, it’s still too hot out there.
4.) What was your guitar life like before having a guitar routine & how has implementing a consistent guitar routine helped you? (if possible name 3 ways).
Before TAC, (about 2-3 years ago) there wasn’t much of a routine. I’d find something online to try to help my hand positioning and transitioning between open chords. It was slow and tedious without much real progress.
It’s still early on in my experience with TAC, but I do notice that having a consistent schedule and lessons to follow (30DTP) keeps me on track even though I don’t know what the road ahead looks like. But like climbing stairs, you don’t need to see all the way to the top. You only need to see the next step in front of you. Eventually you’ll get there.
5.) Bonus Question: What is one non-guitar item that is a must have in your guitar routine?
It’s more about what I must NOT have. That’s distractions. iPhone in another room and TAC lesson on full screen if I’m using the computer. Coffee doesn’t hurt either. 😄
