  • Learn to love the playground.

As a child we would play in the city park and I got to know every hiding place and piece of playground equipment. After fretboard Wizard I determined to learn every note on my new playground. It wasn’t that hard. I started at the nut EADGBE. Then walked up the Low E string over time until I reached the 12th fret. Later I bounced around just picking out all the C’s, D’s, E’s, etc. or the 4(5TH fret- ADGCEA) or the 5(7TH fret- BEADF#B).

I would do this in my head in down time. I especially still do it like counting sheep if I awake in the night and want to clear my head and go back to sleep.

It was not a burden at my self pace and it has been such a useful stored bit of knowledge as I add pentatonic and other scales to my toolkit. I highly recommend it.

    Ëxcellent approach.

I’m just staring to work through the foundations of fretboard navigation. Currently, if I have time I can walk through the notes on each string but i want it to be automatic without having to go: ‘this note is here so that fret is xyz note’

It’s a fun playground, once you get to know it💡💡👍🤩👍💡💡

Thanks all. I’m now starting to try to tie the tabs to the staff. Conceptually I get it but reading a staff is not something that feels as intuitive as tabs.

what a great analogy @albert_d So many key lessons here- enjoy the process – you didn’t burden your self. Focus on the process not the outcome. Make it fun.

I’ve been working on the 5 Pentatonic scale positions of CAGED in a similar way. Each day of the week matches a key Monday is C Tuesday A etc. At first I just started with the root note closest to the nut then worked through the shapes up the neck. Recently I roll a dice and start with what ever string number comes up. If it’s Monday

I’m in the key of C and if the dice comes up 3 then I find the first C note on the 3rd (G) string (5th fret) and start with that shape. I’ve found this to be a great way to learn these shapes and connections and as a bi product a better understanding of the entire fretboard 🍻

I love it . Using the days of the week and a roll of the bones. I’m going to give it a toss. Thanks for the idea. It sounds fun.
