  • Learning the basics question..

Posted by David F on May 31, 2021 at 1:07 pm

Just starting and already a “little” confused. in the first lesson BLUES SHUFFLE in the intro he plays only one string, does the same in the play thru. In the lesson he teaches playing two strings.. Sounds wrong to my ear… the one string sounds right and is easy… why am I confused here?

Hello @[email protected] , Welcome to TAC 👏👏 not sure about the lesson you’re referring to, but perhaps you’re talking about a “drone” string, where the scale is played along with an open string – perhaps the lo E or the A string being played with the thumb while your index and middle fingers are playing up and down the scale on the D & G or the G & B strings?🤔

No thats not it.. Its the very first lesson. Blues Shuffle. He clearly teaches to play both strings and in intro to lesson plays one and same in play thru at end..

Hi @[email protected] , I tried to answer you yesterday (2x), but for some reason the posts wouldn’t go through. so I’m going to try again today.

Yes, Tony is playing 2 strings together at the same time – consider them a pair. For this lesson, it starts with the A & D strings as a pair. The A string is played open (meaning it’s not fretted) while the blues melody is being fretted (played) on the D string. Your pick is striking both strings at the same time, every beat. It requires a little control of the picking hand to not strike other strings than the A & D strings. Then the pair changes to the D & G strings, but the fretting and picking pattern remains the same. If it still sounds bad to your ear, then make sure that your guitar is in proper tune. Hope this helps👍
