learning to record using PreSonus StudioOne Artist
Posted by PhilBarru on May 3, 2021 at 10:30 pmDoes anybody use StudioOne Artist for recording? I just got a PreSonus AI and it comes with StudioOne Artist. I am a total beginner at recording. NEVER used a DAW (not even Garage Band) before. I managed to record a track but cannot figure out how play it back so I can listen to it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

@PhilBarru Did you click the replay icon and get no sound or can’t find the icon? Refer to picture for icon. Play is the right pointing triangle. If no sound, you will need to adjust your sound card “playback” setting to point to the correct speaker. I can assist further if you are on PC.

Thank you Jeff. I am on a Mac. I do not have a choice to use my computer as the playback device. The choices are: 1. Built-in Output, 2. Studio24c, 3. No Audio Device. I am not sure what Built-in Output would mean but I have tried it anyway with no success.
I have headphones plugged into Studio24c and have it set as the Playback device. I am hitting the playback Icon and it is clearly playing back through the recording but no sound comes out.
Thanks for your suggestions.

When you press play does the Master Fader show signal playing?
Is your AI setup in S1 as the input AND Output device?
Are your headphones or speaker plugged into the AI?
These should all be YES (If you have speakers or headphones)

Hi Brandon. I am not sure what the Master Fader is (did I mention I am in the Dummies class?) but when I click the Play icon (right pointing triangle) a line starts sweeping through the graph of my recording from left to right and the sound meter graphs on appropriate Input and Main graphic displays are bouncing up and down in a manner that is coordinated with the visual graph above them
I have gone to the Start Menu and clicked on “Configure Audio Device” then clicked Audio Setup tab. I have the AI set up as both the Playback and Recording device.
My headphones are plugged into the back of the AI and the phone volume is at 50%.
I am getting no playback sound.

Hey Phil,
@AttyTJ uses PreSonus. You might ask him about some of the issues. He uses a Mac. You haven’t said if you use Mac or PC. It makes a difference.

Hi @PhilBarru , I think @Brian_P uses Presonus, so he might have some tips. I have the Presonus USB-96 (I think??? – at work so it’s not in front of me), and have the StudioOne Artist, but I really don’t use it. I found a guy on youtube who does tutorials on it, but I never really got into it…

Hi Brandon. I have seen three of Joe Gilder’s videos but hadn’t seen the intro vid that is great background. Thank you. Once I get to a rudimentary understanding of the absolute basics his information should prove invaluable.

The good news is I am now able to listen to the song I recorded last night when I hit playback. The not so good news is I did not knowingly change any settings. However, I did switch to the “Edit” screen before I hit Playback and was able to hear the recording through my headphones plugged into the AI. When I went back to the “Mix” screen I was still able to hear. Yay! Small Win! Thanks again for the suggestions. I truly wish I knew what I did but I hope I don’t undo these settings inadvertently.

@PhilBarru, check the e-Mail I sent, and I believe you deactivated the “silence to main ouput” control, but we will see, won’t we.
Doing it right by mistake is Doing it Right. Doing it right and knowing why, means you are Doing it Right and can intentionally repeat it.

Small win. I managed to record another song and then replay and listen to it. I even adjusted the settings so I could monitor while recording with minimal latency. There is hope for this audio illiterate dummy.

This is great Phil, I’m so glad you got farther down the path. And it’s ok to be at the beginning. We all started out knowing nothing. Some never start and learn something. So you are ahead of the game.
