  • Left-handed AND upside down

Took in a Bill Staines concert last night. Great show. I noticed right away that he was left handed, but it wasn’t until later in the show that I realized he was also playing upside down (in other words, he just flipped the guitar; he hadn’t restrung it). Just after I noticed this, he talked about it. He said it was unusual, but not unique. He mentioned that Elizabeth Cotton had played that way.

At any rate, being a natural lefty who has always played right-handed, I decided to take a stab at it this morning. After a lengthy effort, I managed to produce some clear sounding chords (an A, D, C and G), and an A to D transition that didn’t clunk. So I count that as a small win.

And I’m definitely sticking with my current style of playing.

And you can add this to a list of really worthless things: A cutaway on a guitar being played upside down.

Too funny, and yes you get a small win for effort!

That must have been disorienting playing guitar upside down. I’d say that was win! 👏
