  • Playing & singing together

As I prepare to post my first “Play for Us” video I discovered a need to work on the basics of how to mesh smoothly guitar playing with my singing. Being an experienced singer it is the guitar playing that lags in the songs I am working on. Did just find Tony’s Acoustic Life episode on the subject way back on December 20, 2017 with some good basic information Play Guitar & Sing at the Same Time (in 3 Easy Steps) – YouTube He mentions another link with more detailed information that I was unable to bring up as it only routed to the TAC site. Anybody out there have some tips on how you play and sing together confidently? Appreciate the advice, Jack (aka Guitargeezer)

Playing and singing are difficult to do (who woulda thunk), but my suggestion is to try and play a song that’s lyrics follow the tune. Something simple, like happy birthday or twinkle twinkle little star to get started. There are some basic songs that are a little more advanced that still have the lyrics follow the rhythm. The other thing is to really know how to play the song before putting vocals to it. Also, know your vocals inside and out so that you don’t have to think about them when playing and singing.

Appreciate your advice @Loraine as I will use the KISS (not the band) principle in mind.

Great question, Jack. I’m just replying to upvote it 🙂 I’ve made some progress in that respect (and I’m not an experienced singer, lol) just by sticking to easier songs (as in U2 and not artic monkeys, to give an example). I would love to hear some advice as well from those who went through this process and made it to the other side.

Thank you @Alisa for responding as I suspected we are not alone with this inquiry.
