Praising my 314ce, again. And next String selection.
I dropped my wife off at the airport yesterday and decided to stop by my local mom and pop guitar store.
Tony’s review of the Yamaha Fg800 peaked my interest and they happened to have one. I was pleasantly surprised at how low the action was. Neck was a bit fatter and rounder but it played and sounded ok. I tried a drop d tune and the tuners were a bit on the sloppy side. But the price was just over $200 so shouldn’t expect too of the line.
next I went to the Martin wall as the D10e – D13e series also peaked my attention. Guess what, same sloppy tuners. Build was rough around the edges too. Action was higher than the yamaha. Tone was ok.
third wall was the Taylors. They have a 2019 builders edition 517e that is new. It’s been there for a while. But it did not do much for me. Picked up a GT urban ash. Reviews say it is a fun guitar to play because of the shorter scale and smaller size. To me, meh.
went home and pulled my 2013 Taylor 314ce out. Even with the d’addario XS strings that I’m not particularly a fan of, the choir of heavenly angels started singing immediately!
I think most of the strings on the store guitars needed cleaning or changing. Maybe my experience would have been better.
did I mention new strings? Well, at I bought a set of Martin silked wrapped strings for when I’m ready to change. Which won’t be for another month or two.
