Strumming
Posted by BobR67 on April 2, 2021 at 11:32 amI’m doing great with learning chords and chord changes. I have been spending most of my time on struming patterns. I feeling frustrated and stuck. It’s like I have no rhythm. I know the answer is practice and working on it. I just had to get that off my chest.

Have you tried playing with the dreaded metronome? As much as folks hate it (myself included), it -does- work. Something you can try: Start with one chord, start the metronome at a reasonable tempo (say 60 bpm or so) and just do one down strum per click. Nice and easy. When you’re comfortable with this, try speeding up the tempo, or try doing a down strum and up strum on one tick. You might have to slow down the tempo before you feel comfortable doing this. After a while, you’ll find yourself speeding up the tempo to make the exercise more challenging. Your ultimate goal (one of them anyway), is to develop the ability to “count” the beat in your head, regardless of the tempo. Hope this helps 😺

Thanks, I have been putting off using a metronome. But I will give it a try. Well not a try I will learn to play along with it.

Hey Bob. I totally get where your coming from. This has been the main obstacle for me learning the guitar. From a young lad who wanted to play along to my favourite songs to now an older lad who still wants to play those songs. I always wrote it off to having no rhythm and giving up. Recently tho since I’ve joined TAC this has changed to me thinking I’ve never learnt rhythm. Biggest brake through for me has been playing along with Tony and then discovering the metronome. I still can’t play along to those songs but I’m learning so much especially about rhythm that I feel it is coming. I even tap my foot in time to songs as I’m listening to the radio now. So I guess in a roundabout way (I’ve had a few beers😂) I’m saying that rhythm is something that is learnt. Have a go with the metronome and start basic then I think/hope the rest will come

BobR67, strumming is my nemesis too. LOL. It’s the hardest part of playing for me. I am working on embracing the metronome but it’s not exactly a love affair yet.
