Tony’s Acoustic Challenge – The New Way to Learn Guitar Family Forums Small Wins Taylor 812ce. New baby for my guitar family

  • Taylor 812ce. New baby for my guitar family

I finally broke down and traded in my Martin D28 for a smaller guitar. I bought a Martin D28 last year and it was a big mistake for me. The D28 is a big guitar and quite frankly, built for a much bigger person than myself. I thought somehow I would grow into it. Well, I didn’t. I finally took it to the guitar store near me and traded it in. Now I am the proud owner of a Taylor 812ce. Fit’s my body perfect. Nice and easy to strum or finger pick. AND absolutely gorgeous. I should have done it a long time ago.

I also started with a bigger bodied guitar. Due to some shoulder issues, I never felt comfortable playing it. I also have a GS Mini and a Taylor Grand Concert. It’s a smaller bodied 12 fret like yours, bur it doesn’t have the cut away. I love it, but It’s really tough to access anything above he 14th fret. I have been looking at maybe getting a new Taylor as well. How do you like the body bevel? Thanks for sharing.

With a 6 string, that is a 12 fret, I would want the cutaway. I don’t go beyond the 12 fret much, but sometimes I do. With a 12 string guitar (like the 562ce) I would want the full body to capture all that sound, besides I don’t think it would be necessary with a 12 string. I wanted the bevel only because it looked good. Since its a smaller body guitar I don’t think it really makes a difference on my arm. But…. now that you asked, I’m going to pay a little more attention to it on my other guitars that don’t have the bevel. If I see a different, i’ll post.

That’s a tough one when we have to admit defeat and realize the guitar we thought we’d love wasn’t right for us. I have 2 such guitars right now. Beautiful guitar, and I’d love to here her @Cadgirl . May you have many playing hours together.

It’s was a tough decision. I had my Martin for close to a year and it was a killer to play. I really hated to trade it and lose money on it, but I think I made the right choice. One day I’ll get the courage up to play something on a VOM.

Thanks, it really is a nice guitar. It cost a little more than I wanted to pay but it was well worth it. For a smaller guitar it has a lot of sound to it. So easy to play. It’s so beautiful. Now, I need a Taylor T-Shirt. 🙂

That is a stunning looking guitar and I hope you have a great time playing something more comfortable. It really is important to feel right with the guitar and struggling with something that isn’t right, no matter how good an instrument, is no fun. I love my Yamaha AC3R which is a concert body with the same cutaway you have there. It just works for me better than my dreadnought, although I love that for the volume! Have a great time with your new friend. (One day I will own a Taylor!) 🤘😎🎸

Thank you, love the new guitar. I should have taken the Martin back after the first week but I didn’t want to admit defeat (like @Loraine said). It had a lot of sound to it, but I finally had to admit it was too big for me. I’m not a heavy handed player and I finger pick mostly. So it was the wrong guitar for me. Besides, if I want it louder I’ll buy an amp. 🙂

Nothing wrong with “right sizing”. We do it after kids leave. The nest so why not with our guitars? Good choice ober shoulder discomfort.

Thanks, I am really surprised how much easier this guitar is to use. Super easy on my finger tips.

Nice! Good choice. A good lesson for all newer guitar players (myself included) to play multiple guitars over a period of time before pulling the trigger on such an important purchase. Early on, I bought an Epiphone ‘inspired’ by 1964 Texan reissue. Just not a good fit. Epiphone can make great guitars, but that wasn’t right for me. Ended up with a Taylor 114 CE and, more recently, a Martin 00015M. Love them both.

The best thing I started doing was researching on-line for guitars best for finger-picking. Then I googled what stores had what I wanted to look at ‘in stock’. That was the best thing I could have done. Nothing like actually sitting down and playing the instrument before laying down your cash. The store I used also has a 45 day return policy. That nailed it for me. I can’t go wrong with that.

It was a touch decision to trade in the Martin. It’s a nice guitar and lot of sound to it. But, it just wasn’t my fit. Now, I know better.

@Cadgirl – I lucked up by getting a gently used Taylor 414ce-R as my second and now favorite of mine. You have good reason to be excited with the Taylor. Regardless of brand or model, if it feels right, it is right for you! Have fun and wear it out!

Really like the Taylor 812ce. Now I’m thinking i’m going to use my Taylor GSmini for open D tuning and get myself familiar with that. I just saw ‘Man of Constant Sorrow’ in a tutorial in Open D. Give me something new to try. Just started the Strumming course with Tony. Glad you have yourself a favorite. It’s always nice to have a spare 🙂

My spare is a Taylor GS mini too. I use it for Daily Challenges initially as I learn. Good idea to D tune yours for different kind of sound.

I just saw a tutorial on ‘Man of Constant Sorrow’ and it was in Open D tuning. That’s what gave me the idea of having a guitar set aside just for that.

    Very nice, Cadgirl!

I’m a big fan of the relief area/armrest on some guitars. I also like cutaway styles.

Congrats on the new baby. 🙂

I was leery of the cutout. I thought a smaller guitar and then removing more of the space in it? Just sounded like trouble to me. But, alas, it sounds great. Since it’s attached at the 12th fret I might need that cutout to get to those higher strings. All in all, it was a good choice for me. Thanks

        HI, Cadgirl,

Good for you! I’m very happy for you! Taylor makes comfortable, beautiful sounding guitars and you chose a very nice one!

The full size dreadnought shape felt large for me too. I also researched carefully before buying for my needs. I have two smaller size Martins, that I love . . . a 000-18 Standard and a Dreadnought Jr. The DJr. was my first guitar. It feels 3/4 size and is comfortable and nice sounding to begin playing with. The 000-18 Standard is beautiful sounding and comfortable for finger picking, she sings! The Dreadnought Jr., I like more for strumming. Love them both. Very grateful 🙂

        Happy playing!

        Cherie 😀

Good for you @Cadgirl . I am not a fan of Martin, though they have made great guitars for many, many years. I am a fan of Taylor though I don’t own one and may never own one.

Taylors sound great and play great. How can you go wrong? And this is a really high quality guitar, no doubt about that. I’ll stop there before I start saying negative things about Martin guitars.

I have always held Martins on a pedestal since I was a kid. That’s why I bought the Martin D28. I should have done my homework and realized that it was not going to be a good guitar for me or for finger picking. I looked at the Martin line and I didn’t see anything that I really liked or that was suited to me. I investigated guitars before buying the Taylor 812. Also made sure I went to guitar stores trying guitars out this time and was able to do comparisons. I paid more than I wanted to, but, the plan is not to get rid of it. 🙂

While you may have spent more than you intended, I would think that a Taylor that is well taken care of, is going to hold it’s value pretty well. That’s at least SOME consolation.

If I use it, it will be money well spent. I think it’s a good fit for me, so I’ll use it. I just watched Tonys Acoustic Tuesday where he was talking about breaking in a guitar. I have heard that before and actually thought it was a bunch of bull, but he seems to think you should play as much as possible to break it in. I usually use my nylon string for practice, but I’ll start using the Taylor in it’s place. 🙂
