  • The Last Firefly (original)

Posted by Philb on August 16, 2022 at 5:28 pm

I am trying to expand my understanding; using a chord wheel; to go beyond the usual chord progressions I have stuck to; changing keys from verse to chorus. The verse was in C: I, vi, ii: the chorus was G: I, vi, vii I think). Simple chords. Did the chords work well together? For a subject, I saw an article on the diminishing number of fireflies. It took me back to a time of youth in the Midwest; and I pondered what would happen when the last light goes out. I was not trying to be political; but was looking at it from the viewpoint of a youth, and something lost from childhood. Excuse the toilet; I forgot to close the door. LOL Excuse the singing. I would gladly have someone else sing if I could.

Hi @Philb , I love your song. It has a great mix of nostalgia, reality and hope. Great chord progression as well. Thanks so much for sharing! Nice job! 😎🎸🎶👏

That was “Really Truly” nice @Philb 👏👏👏 I could picture in my mind everything you were singing about🤔 It certainly makes you think about what the future could hold, if we’re not careful about what we do today😱 I really enjoyed listening Phil, thank you for posting👍👍

Oh, by the way, I didn’t read your comments above the video until after I posted, so this is an addendum. I was trying to improvise over your track and couldn’t figure out what key you were using, then I read your comments. I like the idea of changing keys between verse and chorus, it shows improvement and growth in your writing and playing IMHO🤩

@Kitman Thank you for taking the time to listen and respond.
@Bill_Brown Thank you! My understanding of music theory is very limited. I read your comments on the daily challenge and see a great understanding of what is being played and how to adjust, adapt, or use. I appreciate the feedback you give. I have a long way to go though in understanding; step by step. So in improvising over it were you just using notes found in the scale of the Key (in this case C & G)? It would be nice to hear what you did if you ever want to share. Thanks Bill!
@stevieblues Thanks for listening and the kind words. I see you supporting a lot of people and posts in the forums. Thank you for being such an active part of the community. It would be good to see you post something of your journey sometime. Take good care!

Yes @Philb , just using single notes in the key – in this case I was doing ok in G, then suddenly nothing seemed to sound right (lol). I’d look at the video and try to see what chords were being played and then I saw G and shortly after that nothing sounded right. I was confused to say the least. Then I read what you had posted above the video. I haven’t tried to improvise over your song since that time.
