  • Thumb on the low E Small Win

Posted by AMPSweeney on May 18, 2021 at 9:06 am

May 18th Tribute to Mr. Rice. Strumming all 6 chords for a D chord with my thumb on the low E, and it sounded crisp the first time, and every time. MYTH busted! Don’t need long fingers to reach around the top of the fretboard and plant the thumb on the low E string to get a good sound. Didn’t see it coming! So very grateful to Mr. Rice and Mr. Polecastro

I gotta try this out! I have small hands myself and it’s always been discouraging to me, thinking that it’ll be near impossible to ever reach anything easily, especially on the first few frets. I need to keep experimenting with what works for me, without necessarily adapting poor habits.

try it! I mean half the time, the thumb is above the fret. It doesn’t take much to make contact with the E string and that’s it, the sound you want. Did you try it?

I love playing the low E like this whenever I’m able to. Becomes easier and easier with practice. Very nice win @AMPSweeney

I whimped out and didn’t try it during practice. Then I read your post and had to try it. It worked. Thanks for the inspiration!
